Leonardo DiCaprio hit CinemaCon on Tuesday to debut a new look at Paul Thomas Anderson‘s “One Battle After Another,” an $130 million adaptation of a Thomas Pynchon novel that’s one of those big, bold bets that studios rarely make anymore. It’s the first time DiCapro and Anderson have ever collaborated — DiCaprio almost starred in Anderson’s breakout “Boogie Nights,” but left the project to appear in “Titanic,” and the rest, as they say, is history.
“I’ve been wanting to work with Paul for, gosh, 20 years now,” DiCaprio said. “With this film he’s tapped into something politically and culturally that’s burning beneath our psyche.”
DiCaprio went on to promise that the film unspools on an “incredibly epic scale.” In that spirit, Anderson directed the film in VistaVision for Imax.
The film finds DiCaprio playing a hard-living revolutionary who is trying to rescue his kidnapped daughter. In off-beat, often hilarious footage shared at CinemaCon by DiCaprio and his co-stars Regina Hall and Teyana Taylor, DiCaprio’s character struggles to remember the password that will bring a group of radicals to his assistance.
“I fried my brain,” DiCaprio admits on a phone call with an operative. “I have abused d**** and alcohol for the past 30 years. I am a d*** and alcohol lover.”
But the voice on the other end of the line isn’t sympathetic, telling DiCaprio’s character that he’s being too aggressive and is making him feel unsafe because his raised voice is giving him “noise triggers.”
“This is not the way revolutionaries do s***,” DiCaprio says in frustration.
“One Battle After Another” boasts a top-shelf cast. Sean Penn co-stars as the film’s main villain, a steely-eyed colonel who looked pretty frigging scary in the footage, while Benicio del Toro is DiCaprio’s gun-toting, gonzo comrade. Newcomer Chase Infiniti rounds out the cast. The project has been shrouded in secrecy — Warner Bros., the studio behind the film, didn’t even reveal its title until a few weeks ago.
“One Battle After Another” has attracted a great deal of media attention for its budget, a massive figure for a movie that doesn’t feature superheroes or space battles. None of Anderson’s films have ever grossed anywhere close to what is being spent on “One Battle After Another,” though many are considered to be among the greatest movies ever made. DiCaprio’s box office track record is enviable, however. In the past, he’s turned challenging fare like “The Revenant” and “The Wolf of Wall Street” into unlikely financial hits.
There’s certainly about 1,000 times the action of Anderson’s “There Will Be Blood.” The latest trailer overflows with car chases, machine gun battles, Swat teams kicking down doors and one stressed out DiCaprio.
“Don’t f***ing panic,” DiCaprio says at the end of the trailer. “Keep your s*** together.”
“One Battle After Another” was originally slated to debut this summer, but Warner Bros. recently moved the film from August 8 to September 26, 2025, where it will be more likely to be part of the awards conversation.

Leonardo DiCaprio, Regina Hall and Teyana Taylor took the stage at CinemaCon to discuss One Battle After Another, the upcoming big swing film from filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson.
In the comments during Warner Bros.‘ presentation, DiCaprio heralded Anderson after their first feature collaboration. “I’ve been wanting to work for Paul for over 20 years now,” the star said. “He’s one of the most unique talents of our time.”
DiCaprio added, “With this film, he has tapped into something politically and culturally that is brimming beneath our psyche.” The actor said the cast was grateful to “improvise and become our own characters.” He continued, “His ability to work with actors is so unique and bar none.”
Hall added, “What was so incredible was how collaborative the process was.”
Taylor shared about her character, “She’s a mess. But one thing about her is, she loves very hard.” The actress added jokingly that her character “is just not likable. She’s got a lot going on.”
Warner Bros. then revealed previously unseen footage, including DiCaprio losing his cool during a phone conversation. “I’m a d*** and alcohol lover,” his character says in the clip. “I will hunt you down and stick a loaded piece of dynamite in your f***ing a******.”
Warner Bros. releases the black comedy movie in theaters on Sept. 26. Rounding out the cast are Sean Penn, Benicio Del Toro and Chase Infiniti.
One Battle After Another centers on a group of former revolutionaries who reconnect to help their member Bob Ferguson (DiCaprio) find his daughter.
Anderson helmed the film from his own script. He serves as a producer alongside Sara Murphy and Adam Somner.
The Hollywood Reporter previously reported that One Battle After Another is said to be an exploration of Thomas Pynchon’s 1990 novel Vineland and carries a budget of more than $130 million. The movie’s release date was recently pushed to Sept. 26 after previously having been scheduled to hit theaters Aug. 8.
A previously released trailer includes DiCaprio imploring Del Toro, “I need you, brother. Sensei, Sensei, Sensei, please.” Del Toro replies, “Courage, Bob. Courage.” This leads a perplexed DiCaprio to respond, “That’s it? Courage. Yeah.”
Anderson’s most recent feature was 2021’s Licorice Pizza, which landed three Oscar nominations, including best picture.
CinemaCon is the annual event for exhibitors and Hollywood studios that runs this year from March 31 to April 3. It is presented by Cinema United (formerly the National Association of Theatre Owners).
Do we know what the runtime is?
Get the sense it clocks in around 3 hours.
Early test screenings said it’s around 3 hours, I think a report when the trailer came out/it got fully revealed said 2hr50
But Boots Riley said PTA told him it isn’t fully finished yet, so it could change

Materializing a Boots Riley cameo.
I just peeped in the trailer that this shot on VistaVision
apparently The Brutalist was as well - making this only the second film entirely shot on VV since Marlon Brando's One-Eyed Jacks (1961)
it'll be surreal if casual audiences actually f*** with this new PTA. I just want the casuals to know who goat is.
