U got an example?
Last Night by Morgan Wallen, midtempo west coast hiphop groove
Sexy Red’s hits
Kill Bill by SZA
Levitating is a top three hit of the decade
The pop folks like The Weeknd, Tate McRae, PinkPanthress adapting that 2000s midtempo Neptunes and Timbo club sound
Brent’s new album
The opium fellas are onto something stylistically as well if we’re looking forwards
i always say punchline rap is a volume game lmao any dope punchline rapper will have some terrible bars. but that was cole’s thing and although he had some clunkers, he was also a great rapper bar for bar, and that carried him before he had any success with writing great singles
and i get why the post can seem like it’s influenced by nostalgia but i promise it’s not. i’m really looking at it from the perspective of an artist that’s trying to break in, as someone who really studies everything. i’ll put it like this: can you take all of the attributes i listed and replace those names with mainstream 2020s rappers? and will they actually be as good as or better than the 2010s artists i listed?
No one really cares about being as good as the rappers before them/matching up to legends. Its all about "can I fit in too this box" or "can I copy this hot sound right now". No one cares about carving a legacy, rap went from art to being a sport, except fans still treat it like art.
He's relevant but is he really carrying the game? Im a huge Kendrick fan. This last album didnt have anywhere near the impact DAMN, TPAB or GKMC had even though it was still a good album
I hear what you saying
wouldn’t say he’s carrying the game in the traditional sense but whenever he drops or makes a move everyone pays attention & there’s discussion
He brings life to the genre that way
Being a rappers is literally akin to being a fast food worker now, as far as work ethic goes. Their bosses know what makes money, and their not gonna let anyone stray from that money making formula, and if you do, the base/foundation is gonna be so similar to your previous s***, its barely noteworthy.

it’s nasty man and the worst part of it is that if artists actually study the game, you’ll see that only the people that try to be as great as those before them and get creative to try to push a boundary will see any long term success
but another big issue is that we have a lot of people in the artist position who aren’t actually artists
This is why other genres are slowly taking market share from rap. If all your top artists are your 10+ year veterans, there's a problem.
Monte Booker the closest these days to embodying what Tim & Neptunes did in the early 00s
His sound just hasn’t popped
I’ve seen his name float around before, got any album recommendations?
go on…
They understand the importance of visuals and building a fan relationship off of giving them a certain lifestyle in a colorful and entertaining way
Also interesting sound selection

Bingo, exactly, its like I know anyone can be classified as an artist but, when it come to being a rapper, can you succeed as a great rapper if you don't even respect the genre and its history? Some of the worst characters in music history, are rapping today, so many of todays rappers have 0 business having a platform. Thats why I say that today, its way more sport then art cause, Hip Hop feels like a sports league now.
Everyone is trying to be the hottest of the season, looking at the next man stats, trying to copy them, when the goal of being a rapper, was always to be a levels above sport, your an artist just like Van Gogh/Picasso. I think its just a lost cause now, too much ignorance has spoiled the game, and the fact that labels always wanted Hip Hop like it is now in the first place.
Kendrick, Drake, and Cole are like Lebron, Steph, and Durant.
They dominated the 2010's so much and were so balanced between skill and marketability that it's hard to see them getting replaced.
Plus, we live in a cycle of short attention spans, toxic stan culture, and lack of mass media so it's harder to sustain a superstar career in this day and age.
Even outside rap, there's people already counting O Rod out just because her latest album didn't do as well as Sour.

He does all of Smino stuff damn near

They’re unique in the sense that they came up all at the same time organically (something that is missing these days) and continually pushing their talents forward as well as not succumbing to any sort of addictions, death, or controversies that have gotten a lot of their predecessors. They’re all three in the top 25 rappers of all time at minimum. “Replacing” one would be challenging but all three still operating at this level is impossible. Not even getting into most of the newer generation lacks the love and respect for the genre that all three have shown and why they will continue to stand the test of time
This plus the pandemic and people like Kanye Ross and Future making it so that niggas can be childish/“youthful” for much longer into their 40’s/50’s
But also the new generation just doesn’t know how to rap. Even the niggas who are considered nice wouldn’t have been s*** when Big Ghostfase was calling Drake and J Coles debuts mid
So let alone the niggas who came into the post 2016 landscape where melody and aesthetic > rapping fr
A perfect example of this is Lucki. He sticks to his original style and he’s one of the most unique artists of all time. Instead he turned into boneless slightly abstract worded Chief Keef to fit in
The folks in the lab that think adapting The Neptunes and Timbaland and Danja sounds from the 2000s is the move are on the right track…but the execution is all off. They forgot they need to make their own powerful rimshot/repurpose a unique one from a previous decade, ie Young Chop repurposing the 2006 Baby Bend Over snare he got from a drum kit. That’s the first tangible step forward as far as solutions are concerned. And this doesn’t just apply to hiphop but pop and r&b as well if we look at the zeitgeist going forwards
Excuse me if this sounds crazy
Nigga you talking forbidden codes. You don’t sound crazy at all
Nobody is this a***ytical about it anymore
Every 5 years or so I hear people b****ing about the state of rap music.
But usually with that, there's some really exciting new artists with potential to push the genre forward.
I look around now, and it's a pretty barren landscape.
How tf are we gonna make middle aged Drake, Cole and Kendrick carry the torch still? There's no one for them to pass it to.
Who's selling records and bringing bars?
Who's making some real artistic efforts with depth to it even? Maybe a couple no names are making some sparks with rocks right now, but have yet to catch fire.
We need a new generation artist to step up in 2024. It's really getting sad seeing 49 year old Drake can't even take a vacation to get his tummy fixed because nobody wants to drop music anymore
Agree bro
No one is hungry like that
Can't remember the last time I've been excited for a new act
It's always the same people

Motherfuckers try to joke about having "intelligence" within Hip Hop, but bro, it really does take a certain type of intelligence/sensibility to be a great rapper in the traditional sense. You have to be witty with on point timing, like a great comedian, on top of having flows, making everything rhyme, coming up with concepts etc.
So many guys/girls out right now just lack so much imo.

And this all got replaced with are you tough, can someone from your city vouch that you are tough and/or do you look cool enough

actually a really great point
Crine at thinking Cole is a part of the big 3
Bro has such a distinct sound too, you instantly know its a Monte beat when you hear it. I hope people hop more on his s*** he deserves a good career, bro too talented.
This exactly my point
