Mandolin ManIt's disingenuous to act like everyone talking about this keeps track of hip hop music 24/7 and everyone just collectively agreed that this was somehow the worst thing ever said by anyone ever.
This got huge because of social media. Social media is among the most unpredictable forces in our current media climate. This could have gone away after four minutes or gotten way bigger than it is now.
The initial complaints just happened to hit at the right time and reach people with big audiences that then grew the story exponentially. The reason complaints keep piling on is because more and more people hear about it and they chime in. I promise you there are plenty of people online applying the same morals to the entire spectrum of hip hop, they just don't blow up. This one did, which clouds people's judgements, making them think this was everyone collectively thinking it crossed the line.
It's not like everyone online just collectively decided that Harvey Weinstein (No I'm not comparing him and Dababy morally) was the worst of the worst in Hollywood and had to go. Everyone piled on him because the story grew exponentially in a similar manner. People can only focus on so many things and eventually the collective locks onto something, usually by sheer happenstance.
People don't really care that much about this. Social media is convenient, so people passively posted some comments about it (not surprising - people aren't big on homophobia) and moved on with their day. The thing is that when this passive discouragement starts to group up to hundreds of thousands of comments it comes across like draconian outrage/witch hunt. Companies and celebrities see it the same way and act accordingly.
Trust me, the majority of people complaining aren't hip hop heads, just everyday people hearing the news that a very influential person in pop culture made blatant homophobic remarks.
A million variables have to line up for something like this to happen, this just happens to be the situation where it did. I notice that I repeated myself a lot so sorry for that. Also sorry for this being way too long.

Real, that’s how I feel about my community, this is an issue we need to discuss but whenever it’s that time it’s “where’s the outrage for things people call out but we ignore” we’ll never make progress cause people argue in bad faith instead of just keeping it a buck about how they really feel.

I get that. Don't really feel like people are that surprised though. Most people seem to agree he's a clown, but then it gets bogged down into discussions about woke/cancel culture/SJWs/etc. and people have to deal with this enough from conservatives so I can understand people's frustrations when people bring whataboutisms into it which brings toxicity and it just becomes an evil circle from there. Hip hops violent lyrics can at the very least be justified based on where the rappers grew up. We all on some level know it’s wrong, but we also GET why that type of content exists. So most people aren’t in any rush to condemn it.

it’s also vicious cycle s***. once it becomes stigmatized, it becomes dangerous to even exist as that, and then ppl raise their kids to hate it as a very real defense against them possibly losing their literal lives for even being viewed as a homosexual.
tbf this exists in lower income white communities too. but just like almost everything else in this country bad things are EVEN WORSE in blacker communities for systemic reasons.

Why don’t we see homophobia as a core theme of hip hop like violence and d**** are? Since we treating it as them as the same. We don’t see full albums based on homophobia or rappers making that the main thing they rap about.
The truth is a lotta these rappers may BE homophobic, but that ain’t got s*** to do with the hood, that’s just life in general. Homophobia everywhere. Now a lotta them had to deal with the d**** and violence on the daily basis. This is why a lot of fans know it’s wrong but give them the benefit of the doubt when they choose to rap about it.
Also, lotta these rappers were forced into they situations nobody forcing them to be anti lgbtq lol

The fact that the church is teaching homophobia is a problem off rip. Especially since it's gay people who are very devout. S*** it's gay people who follow the Bible and its laws better than a lot of straight Christians.
I don't know how you are trying to say homophobia is apart of Black culture as if homophobia is exclusive to us. Homophobia exists everywhere. Doesn't mean those cultures are defined by their homophobia. I don't know why any culture would want to be defined by their hate or be proud of it.
Sidebar, it's a lot of gay Black people within our culture. S***, it's gay Black people who were responsible for many of the positive aspects of Black culture via fashion, art, film, music, and even our language. Probably because the music wouldn't sell and the U.S. isn't interested in hearing records from it. The U.S. is interested i hearing gang violence and d*** dealing annd b**** this b**** that. 50 said America got a thing for this gangsta sht, they love me for a reason. If the music didn't sell, nobody would rap about it regardless of if it represented their real lives.
I'd also like to point out that homophobia in a community doesn't mean that it's a significant part of a person's upbringing all the time. It can be, but it doesn't have to be. I'd also point out being from the hood doesn't mean d**** and gang violence is apart of a person's upbringing which is why you have a bunch of artists from the hood not rapping about those things. d**** and gang violence isn't unique to the hood. You see it in rural america all the time.
