    okay

on record, the album sounds too polished

drake didn't start really dressing decently until like 2017 and he starting jacking the UK swag and wale was like wearing whatever hypebeast or complex told him was cool past like 09 or 10 wale wasn't like that

Drake never really been a dope dresser like that imo, but his style between 09-14 seemed really organic. Wale never really had style like that to me, just like you said, he was just the epitome of a hypebeast. Cudi was truly cutting edge with his style for the time in rap. Those $200 APC Jeans blew my mind back then, then his style got even better during the MOTM2 era

niggas who got into kanye around yeezus be so self-righteous

and if you try and state this in any manner, you get accused of downplaying the dumbass s*** that nigga has said

i'm lowkey so over the moral grandstanding about it all like everyone has selective morality about the artists they give passes to and don't whether they admit it or not. i respect people who can admit that instead of trying to be performative retroactively diminishing one of the greatest artists ever lol

You ma too caught up in who Kanye is today that you don’t recognise the sheer genius & greatness of his music. MBDTF is a certified CLASSIC.

yea i agree like i won't even act like i don't pick and choose s*** depending on artists

i think kanye represents a larger discussion about morality in hip-hop and how obviously devoid and oddly selective it can be

whether that be kanye trying to justify his antisemitism by claiming that jewish run conglomerates profit off black suffering

or even that a lot of important figures in the ""culture"" had more of an issue alone with ye talking about partaking in homosexual activities rather than the circumstances around that. like these ppl will see all that bigotry and hate in his tweets and just chalk it to him being "crazy" again and ranting but actually have real issues with lgbt stuff

The sound was pure hip-hop for the most part, but this high-brow artsy aesthetic from the artwork paintings to the performance art and choreography from George Condo and Vanessa Beecroft was def inspired by and presented from a Eurocentric lens. Kanye’s proximity to whiteness post-808s has always been part of his appeal to a certain demographic that always separated him from other traditional hip-hop acts.

    Good post

It’s not about today it’s about that it’s robbed of its authenticity because it really does sound like he was just trying to make some s*** people liked, just too manufactured and trying too hard yknow

I don't get this at all. It sounds rough at times. The album is super blown out and compressed with a ton of digital distortion from the mastering process. Graduation and Late Registration are far more polished. You mean it has too many layers and overdubs? That it's overproduced?

never understood the 'too polished' argument... I think it sounds rough around the edges (on purpose), and is Ye's attempt at mixing the grimy 90s hip-hop sound with baroque arrangements inspired by 60s and 70s prog-rock. And he succeeded imo. The album is 1 of 1.

Listened to the album and it hasn’t aged that well.

A lot of these songs suffer from being too long for the sake of being long.

As well cringy lyrics/dialogue that is hard to listen to (e.g. the Chris Rock segment on Blame game)

I just laugh when people complain about stupid s*** with this album because it sounds performative af. It's always the same arguments

    "It's TOO perfect"

    "It sounds forced"

    "It's critic bait"

    "the mixing!!"

Stop recycling Kanye's dumbass talking points and think for yourself. Album is incredible, YOU try to do better than MBDTF

When I say this, I mean it’s trying too hard to be perfect. It’s far from perfect. It’s still a classic obv but just my listening experience lol

What I mean is we know Kanye explicitly said he was making that album for people to like him and he made it so it could be seen as a classic, which is fine of course, but the music as a result to me feels

    A. Kinda inauthentic I can hear rhymefest spitting every bar of gorgeous I can tell he wrote less on this album
    B. Over indulgent and full of itself at times see: hell of a life, blame game, songs being 5+ mins
    C. I don’t think it has the very distinct well aged sound of something like 808s or yeezus
    D. Kinda melodramatic and it’s trying so hard to be “grand” it gets kinda tiring

Other than that, songs like Hell of a life and blame game I just never ever would play like so appalled is a cool beat and all but 6 minutes is insane

  • shut up. it's a classic
