Even mixtapes that were essentialy just side albums really started being a thing in the late 00s early 10s but even those initially had a distinct vibe to them that modern "mixtape" releases dont.
We've also seen how this change in definition has been used to f*** over artists when its time to talk about the completion of contracts. Theres been instances where although artists have dropped whats essentially an album on streaming that is promoted like an album as well however due to langue its not treated as a release that goes towards fulfilling their deal.how can we get back to having rappers actually dropping tapes rapping over each others beats, and what are some similar instances in music to the change in definition for "mixtapes" in hip hop.

Mixtapes as they used to be lost their aura when DJ Drama got sued for sample use.. literally used him as an example/scapegoat
SPiritually? When Datpiff went offline, audiomack became a thing and livemixtapes became watered down.
That's 2008 and 2016. Everything since Is the new era.. the vibe isn't the same anymore

LacedIn a vacuum yea sure sounds great. Smaller artists do it all the time. But the reality is that once an artist gets big enough people are gonna want to be compensated. It being "free" sidestepped most if not all copyright laws, allowing artists complete freedom of expression. Think about how expensive it would be to bring a tape like Da Drought 3 to streaming properly. And that's why it's not there
the good thing is that its very possible to do both. im not advocating for solely one or the other. but this whole "boo hoo streaming/microculture ruined my red tinted mixtape era/piracy" attitude is so f***in played out and surface lvl

There's nothing "red tinted" about it. We know that mixtapes in general changed the game because of the rawness and showcasing of talent without all the red tape. DJ Drama getting raided had a devastating effect on being able to move mixtapes hand to hand/street level. The Internet/DatPiff became the backup, and later on the standard. This is just facts and hip hop lore accurate history. Idk when Gen Z became so weird about piracy lmao. It's lame af
