actual songwriting not just vibes
The problem with music of a lot of genres, not just rap, is that new acts don’t respect songwriting, production or arrangements the way they should. Recording has become a loveless process by which musicians create a product that they can tour.
They’re not really incentivized to put effort in either because the short term gains aren’t there for anything beyond 30 second viral hooks, and labels don’t invest in artists who have bigger ambitions than that.

I deadass think we just don't have enough actual rappers anymore. That's not even to say the d***ged out crooning niggas shouldn't exist or have their own space, but they've completely taken over the game. That's why it's still an event when Drake, Cole, Kendrick or even Kanye drops. Them niggas should've been replaced by now
my thing w this is like, in 2015 I don’t think Kanye Wayne Hov or Eminem dropping being the biggest s*** ever would not be an event and they had been around for just as dramatic a time relative the history of hip hop as the big 3 now prolly even longer. legacy acts r big. Legacy acts have even better staying power and commercial dominance now but that’s true of every genre now Beyoncé and Taylor r dusting any new pop artist as soon as they drop.
And to characterize it as all d***ged out crooners id say idk if that’s accurate to say they are completely pushing out others at all, yes it’s a essential kinda bag a lot have but the biggest younger rappers rn are
Doechii, esdeekid, baby keem, slayr
And like all these ppl be rapping they aren’t known for being that archetype. Slayr kinda cuz he sings but he don’t come off d***ged out at all he’s the oopposite,
You be 18
Tbh
The true answer to this for a lot of ppl the is u simply cannot recapture feelings like that and ur not gonna be 19 again and unless u care to find what you like and engage in the same full earnestness and curiosity you did at that age it just won’t happen for you unless it’s a hollow Frankenstein of what it you remember it feeling like in ur youth. Mans just want 2015 pt2 if we being real but they would hate that. Cuz it would be too derivative. And if it wasn’t, it would be too different. After a certain age what makes youth culture exports engaging is entirely dependent on how much you can enjoy their perspectives and tastes, which is harder than ever in an internet era of algorithms and bubbles that affect both young AND older folks.
rappers that read and lived some life before rapping.
More high quality rollouts and albums/EPs.
Less filler and carelessness.
Streaming though.
more top tier artists putting on small tier artists, on some risky s*** like for example ye giving nine vicious a chance to go crazy on adlibs for THIS A MUST and MAMAS FAVORITE
s*** can make rap a bit more interesting when we not using the same 5 features all the time
We do need more of this 10000%
I’ve been saying for years that should be a whole separate genre and both genres would thrive for it
But niggas for some dumbass reason get so butthurt at the idea of Carti Thug Uzi Travis not being actual rap music
Why would a nigga try to learn how to skillfully rap when he can just croon some bullshit throw Autotune on it and “have aura” which just means let Ian connor (or whatever hypebeast or high fashion mf of the week) style you in some bullshit and take weird ass pictures
ppl get butthurt when I dismiss and invalidate music and artists they like as worthless bullshit shocker
Instant and unlimited cheap access killed mass events so excitement is gone for the most part.

music is cheaper than water at this point. basically free. that unlimited access and depleted collective attention span basically eliminates the possibility of something game changing.

Sure does. Really sucks that 99.99% of listeners use a streaming service.
Artist development and investment (time, time, time). A lot of our favorites of all time had big time mentorship or at least an ability and the time to build to their peaks.
Today that’s called industry plant and doesn’t work nor is it incentivized. On the other side of the coin, if you don’t hit a homer out on your first drop, it becomes stigmatized.
So you get a lot of artists that the label throws a little money behind, microwave music creation process, rapid pace drops and if 5% of those artists get a big song, the margin for the label is much higher with less risk than a legend dropping and they recoup much easier.
The young generation is talented and very versatile and hands on with so much of their career. They’re ripping and running because there’s no infrastructure surrounding them.
They had their strengths but i think people overdo that whole “the next generation of rap died with them”
X was special in that he was like the anti Drake (can do any genre/subgenre, at times lyrical but had substance) and Pop smoke could have been one of those ones but imo Juice wouldnt be that out of place in the modern rap landscape to where he’d change much. Pop smoke could have ended up like Lil Tjay or Lil Baby where people just got tired of their whole “thing” as a rapper. Xxx had the most potential but i dont think any of them were above some of the plights that has kinda made most rappers we have now not that exciting
They were not the last 3 intriguing rappers to ever grace earth, salute to them and respect/no negative energy to the dead
x substance? you can only believe that if you’ve been taking substances

not fully disagreeing with the overall sentiment but it's not like Thug doesn't make or can't make an "actual rap music"
The answer is a few event level albums per year and artists having to consistently make great projects (free mixtapes if you will) to gain a fanbase.
