this thread so underrated
🥺 means a lot coming from you my brother, thank you
right? hahaha, the rest kinda goes more indie than your weezer stuff but this song really gets close to it haha especially the chorus melody with the synth following, that’s super pinkertonish
will listen to the album soon, noted

here’s a lil treat also to make up for the tumbleweed that is this roll out, literally leaving us with a postponed album and not a single word on it for months..
a favorite album of mine that you probably never heard of, most likely? “a certain smile, a certain sadness” by rocketship
it’s from 1996 and it’s pretty weezery, can’t you tell from the album title already? not guitar like but more lyrics and melody, songcrafting wise, in the same vein of the indie sound of the era and that rivers was into
this song is my favorite from it, it’s almost a rivers song like, easy to imagine them opening for weezer with this tbh:
!https://youtu.be/F1Eaxecg2-Yit picked up some traffic over the last years, but it used to be really obscure, i still think it is enough that no one else on ktt will post about it! the whole album is now thankfully easy to find on youtube in one single upload:

Wow I loved this.
I’m assuming some of y’all have heard Ozma. Always loved this opening track. You can tell Rivers maybe accidentally lifted the melody when making “I Was Made For You”

!https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VAPJ_iieems&feature=shareyeah we vaguely mentioned them itt, i’ve been meaning to write bout them, started as a hardcore weezer fan band (even covered the green album in full way later) and both lead songwriters and singers now ended up writing and playing with both weezer and the rentals! living the big dream (i also got a personal funny story with one of them guys)
first album still classic, baseball song incredible

remember one time one ex gf came in when i was blasting this song and said “if you havnt not told me this wasn’t weezer i would’ve sworn on god it was a weezer song” lol

weezer performing “In The Garage” during their opening set for Lush in 1994

poster of a show from the tour

photo of weezer in 1994 with Patrick Wilson on the far left rocking a Lush shirt
RAD: What bands have you enjoyed touring with?
Pat: We did Lush...our first big tour was Lush last summer and that was great. I mean, they were awesome. I would watch them every night and they just sounded amazing.
Patrick Wilson interview from 1995
Miki Berenyi -singer guitarist songwriter for Lush- is even featured on The Rentals second studio album (The Rentals is the band formed by Matt Sharp -seen on photo above in middle with the brown shirt- after he left weezer)

wasnt sure about tagging you but i was tryna think n guess who on ktt2 would be looking for power pop and felt like you would be into that
my pleasure! if you want more after that as rvi mentioned here above with his feedback (but the origin of the conversation is from another thread i believe) tthe there’s this really cool OG powerpop album from 1979 by a one man band made in studio, it didn’t take off so now it gets more following bc power pop has a strong fan base but it’s still obscure, here’s my fav songs off of it

i like pop (esp 60s and 80s) but not power pop rock bands
Big Star were great but manly for the ballads
everything will be alright in the end
funny story the original title was gonna be: “everything will be alright in the end except you die”
traces of that still can be find in the liner notes of the album:
(eyd for except you die)

big star never really fit in the traditional sense of what defines power pop imo but i get that, my fav songs by them are def the most depressing ones - holocaust might be the saddest song ever made

idk fam i always considered them the definition of power pop and wiki just confirmed they are considered "the quintessential power pop band" but go off telling me im wrong yet again sis
