Mini series >>> full tv series

If you can’t tell your story in 5-8 episodes, just f***ing don’t. I hate these meandering tv shows that just eat up your time and go nowhere

Lol are you saying that you don’t think full length TV shows should exist?

    Kinda

No tv series should ever go past 5 seasons (10-12 episodes)

Preferably, a show should be wrapped up in about 3 seasons, unless it’s an episodic show or a comedy or something

A lot of shows that come out now have overly complicated plots and 30 different characters. It’s a chore to keep up with

Tv series should take Advantage of the fact that they can tell deeper stories than films, but also not forget to keep stores concise.

Mr robot is a good example. There’s no filler on that show. They don’t needlessly tack on 10 extra characters per season. The characters that are added feel like they were always meant to have a place in the storyline. There’s no dumb filler arcs and over-complication, just straight to the point

Anyways, most shows can’t seem to get that right, so they should go for the mini series format

Let me add to the tv series debate. I really dislike how most tv series have a episode length of 50-60mins. The sweet spot is really 25-30mins. Most tv shows have at least one subplot going on that nobody cares about and could be cut out.
Movies >>> tv shows in general

I’m cool with anything in the 20-40 min range

Most TV shows just don’t deserve to be an hour

It’s probably more of a personal taste thing, but filler episodes or one off episodes are almost a pacing luxury when placed well. They can let plot lines breathe longer. Plus, when done well they can really emphasize the fact that in tv we can really spend time with characters/worlds. Like the bibby episode in Atlanta.

Most filler is weak and probably a product of studios demanding more than the creators had planned, but nothing beats a good hang out episode where characters do something completely off to the side

I understand what you guys are trying to say but what you're complaining about is a pretty unique problem that's arisen in this new age of TV called 'Prestige TV'. Most studios are trying to replicate the golden age of TV when shows like The Wire and The Sopranos were airing on HBO, but unfortunately they're not willing to put in the extra work that was required to make these shows.

Essentially, what prestige television is what happens when TV networks serve you a big mac (Ozark) convincing you its a steak (Breaking Bad). There's been an alarming number of new (and old) showrunners that have been trying to convince people to watch their shows by, not only describing it but by also creating it in the sense that it's a 10 hour movie. Taylor Sheridan (Yellowstone), David Benioff and D.B Weiss, Johnathan Nolan (West World)
J.A. Bayona (Rings of Power) etc.

A lot of these shows also tend to have pacing issues because of this "10 hour" method. They are created from ideas that have (at max) 2 hours of story, and are stretched out to 8-12 hours. The majority of these shows have come out in the last 5 or so years, Yellowstone, Queens Gambit, Severance, nearly all the Marvel Shows, Invasion, Foundation etc. They drag scenes on so that episodes can fit within that 1 hour margin.

Pacing is so important. There’s a reason why when watching Better Call Saul, scene’s that “drag” don’t feel wasted because there is reason for it, it isn’t there to fill up the runtime. Meanwhile, Severance has like 40 scenes of people running or walking in white hallways for like 2 minutes each. Dan Erickson who’s the showrunner of Severance is a beginner with no prior experience in the tv industry, servant showrunner is in the very same boat, the Rings of Power showrunners have zero experience, see the pattern?

RIP Tony Scott, but Top Gun Maverick was a better sequel than anything he had planned

nah his version probably would've felt less like a modern blockbuster and relied allot less on nostalgia.

It's not like they crammed a whole load of nostalgia in this one. It's literally a continuation of the last film so it makes sense that they reference the first movie

I mean they literally throw in flashbacks to the original just so you know the scene is supposed to be nostalgic. The Matrix 4 already poked fun at obvious nostalgia with the same technique and now modern blockbusters are literally doing just that. I don't think that's something Tony would've done. It also just plays heavy into legacy sequel tropes and doesn't have the erotic feel of the original.

people keep calling Top Gun 2 an old fashioned blockbuster but outside of the practical stunts it's really no different .

Yeah, the flashbacks were there for sure. I thought they were tastefully done, but yeah, the sequel is modern blockbuster formula

We used to get 26 episodes seasons and they’d drop every year.

Now we get an 8 episode season every other year. That’s 10 years for a 5 season 40 episode show 😲

Zack Snyder's action sequences, despite getting a lot of love even from his haters, are terrible! At least in his DCU films.

There is no sense of geography, tension or weight in his action scenes - they all for the most part look like globby CGI mess.

Watching Ginny & Georgia s2. There is a lot more… sexual situations involving high school students than I remember in season 1. They’re like sophomore or Juniors. This show has elements where it seems it’s for adults/parents, then other elements where it appears like it’s meant as a coming of age show for teens. That is all good, it’s just for me it’s becoming increasingly weirder n awkward to know what exactly the intention is in showing kids in these sexual situations. Like the lead actress is 25, and she bad, but she’s portraying a 15-16 year old girl. I just feel weirded out if I allow myself to be aroused by these types of scenes
