Someone in this thread already mentioned something like this but I'll say it again:

Golden age of TV (2007-2017) is over and Mr Robot was the last great show. Anything that started from 2017-18 onwards is mid in comparison to the best shows we had from those years.

What are you basing this on? Interesting take.

What are some great recent shows? The Boys? Queens Gambit? These are definitely among the most popular nowadays. But compared to Breaking Bad, S1-4 House of Cards, The Americans, and all the other 'great' shows from that era these new ones that are made for streaming are just not all that. The dialogue and the characters fall into tropes, production value has plumetted (even though they have very decent budgets), characters and story are less complicated and so on.

Mostly I think it comes down to a) some quantity over quality in the race for content between streaming services and b) shows no longer have to appeal to a large portion of the potential audience to be successful. Streaming has made it so that as long as they attract a good enough niche they will do well. They don't have to be great, they can just be good.

i only agree about mr robot bc i don’t watch much else but mr robot

literally the only tv show i binged and occasionally repeat watch. it’s become my comfort show.

corny, but when i need a friend, elliots monologue / dialogue with audience always comforts me

everything made by the coen brothers is overrated filler garbage

they’re like the weird midwestern versions of noah baumbach. just a bunch of yt ppl doing dumb s*** and facing entertaining consequences.

i need to watch no country for old men tho, i have a feeling i’d like that.

also in case you couldn’t tell i hate noah baumbach too lol.

maybe not unpopular but twin peaks s2 is great television when you skip the filler episodes.

it has some of the shows greatest moments and episodes. best finale of all time, literally only parallel to twin peaks s3 finale.

Better Call Saul started in 2015 which is what I was talking about. I should have been clearer, I meant shows that started 2017-. So some great shows are still running but the new stuff is mid.

Also, I would say that while BCS is great it's niche somewhat, so kinda goes with what I said. I would say the same of fleabag. Normal People is by NO means a 'great' show lol. It's very good but 'great' is really stretching it.

Not sure about succession I have not watched.

Fleabag I can agree is niche but Better Call Saul I'm not so sure about, what makes you think that? Also do check out Succession, it is imo the best thing on TV rn.

Big Lebowski is something i didn't like to something i adore over the course of five years, it's fantastic check this video out it's really well made and it explores the themes of the film.

There’s a very specific amount of slow burn that actually works for me anything more or less makes me think of the film in a worse light

For example a movie with a good slow burn for me personally is Blade Runner 2049

One with a exhausting and overbearing slow burn is 2001 : A Space Odyssey

Both to me objectively amazing movies but 2001 is something i just cannot sit through

It’s way too f***ing slow for me while 2049 just gets better with each re-watch for me and feels just right
