I think at this point some people are just tired of him creating a super deep persona for every album

kanye produced all but one song on that album first off, and second off, i implore you to listen to some outkast, tribe, prince, marvin gaye, d’angelo etc. you can absolutely make that level album by self producing. and that’s not mentioning that most people put flower boy and igor in that tier anyways.

I fw you but this paragraph isn't 100% facts tbh fam

Kanye had multiple producers on every MBDTF track, Bink & S1 led the beats for DIAND & Power, also bear in mind that he made it in a setting where he brought loads of musicians with him to his hawaii sessions etc etc

Tribe had two producers (one who was solely a producer) in the group & then Dilla & others in the Ummah helped on the last two 90s albums

OutKast had Organized Noize & Mr DJ

D'Angelo, Prince, Stevie are different but they still had world class musicians in the studio with them & Tyler's musical know how isn't on a D'Angelo/Stevie/Prince level

The two guys from TONTO (Cecil & Bob) helped Stevie with synth stuff, plus he had a grip of musicians on SITK & there are 12 Stevie albums with producers before his first self produced album (WICF)

Prince is the most creative individual musician ever so we can't compare Tyler to him

Folks aren't saying Tyler shouldn't lead his own projects but perhaps he needs more outside assistance. Folks thought he was using stock FL horn sounds because how average he makes them sound yet it was just him directing the live players in a somewhat generic way

Might be the most qualified mf ITT

    I aint subbing dude
Just looking back at that some of that list of current r&b esque artists and some of them reminding me why I hate COLORS/Tiny Desk-core music

F**k tom misch, Jordan rakei, mahalia, h.e.r., yussef dayes, CoZ, Inflo, jungle & any act that puts live instrumentation over great ideas

F**k any musician who listened to D'Angelo & Lauryn Hill a couple times & decided to contribute to the milquetoast bedroom-pup bootleg- neo-soul sound that's been going on for the past 10 years

F**k south london r&b, f**k Res for making this sound 23 years ago before all these clowns tried it (but at least she did it first & did it well)

F**k Gilles Peterson's current audience & any R&B act whose main audience is white women with a lauryn hill bedroom poster or 'vibes' playlist

I hate to say it....but you definitely got a point

Seriously this thread was never a knock on Tyler’s success or his talent both of which he has in droves

The big point I’m making is that his reputation precedes his music

Yussef Dayes slander actually wild to see what is going on itt lmao

  • deleteduser579

”he’s the natural successor of the lineage of Ye, Pharrell, etc. but it’s not translating the way it should be, like at all. To make matters worse it’s not like his sound needs to grow on you either it’s pretty standard alt-rap”

Flower Boy literally changed and shifted alt-rap when it dropped, how is it standard

Lmao dudes threw on cuffed ass jeans and orange beanies overnight @slurpjuicepapi

Tbh, I feel the reason the reputation he gets for his music is so huge is because his progression.

    In what sense?
Obviously Bino is a better singer but I don’t know who I’d say is the better rapper.

Bino is more versatile but idk they’re both pretty great. It’s hard for me to say, imma fan of both

Bino imo was definitely better rapper back in 2013, but when he went the singing route, his rapping skills became rusty.

I like the fact he’s successful but he doesn’t make music for niggas like me

    @op

Some things I hate about Tyler is that he's so damn insecure about his normal voice, even tho that's what made him unique in the first place.

I didn't mind the voice and flows he had on Flower Boy. But s*** got annoying on CMIYGL and Chromakopia.

Also he can come off as a egotistic in his lyrics....

It's like he matured in some areas, but there's areas where I feel lyrically or musically, he just trying so hard to stay confident af, Idk how to describe it, but that's the best I can think of.

  • cryforhell

When it’s all said and done I think Tyler will go down as one of those artists that are more respected for their mind than their music

Never said his music wasn’t good btw I don’t know why this point keeps getting obfuscated. In fact, I said his production was good, his rapping voice is good and he is a solid rapper

These discussions are impossible because this forum is so polarized

His mind? That’s the reason why people didn’t like him lol his antics early on rubbed people the wrong way. Glad he’s grown from it but people saw the actions over the mursick until recently

  • Dec 24, 2024

i would agree if there weren't so many nuclear levels of bad takes thrown about in there

You can’t make MBDTF or TPAB by self-producing everything. At some point the sound becomes trite and outsourcing to better or other creative minds is a good thing and a fresher take on your artistry

like this alone is dumb as f*** and sooo ignorant of the entire history of music. this one part just ruins your post

Idk if you’re referring to your avi but Prince is the exception not the rule

& on second thought I agree that I could’ve worded this better. it’s not impossible to make outstanding albums with little to no outside influence but it is extremely rare especially for a rapper which is why I referred to other rap albums

Colossus contains some of the worst writing I've heard in rap

As much as I love SORRY NOT SORRY, he comes off extremely self-centered in the lyrics, and it makes me laugh because as much as he was inspired by MM&BS for Chromakopia. He was rapping from a selfish stance than Dot who was rapping from selfless stance.
