I’m saying… this s*** is mad average and just cuz ppl played the game 10 years ago and it’s accurate to that… don’t make it good.

This show just isn’t THAT engrossing.

oh this nigga been going in . I said Kroniic had a W week and that I liked the episode for what it was and people said "NOT TODAY"

How long is the game? Spending more time with characters in a video game does not equate to off screen chemistry development because they skipped 3 months and now Joel asks her questions back and makes jokes.

the time jumps not working for you?

I like the show, I look forward to watching it every week, but it is NOT on that top tier Breaking Bad/Sopranos level

but you don't have to compare it to Breaking Bad and Sopranos. If you disagree with the reviewers 10/10 can just say that and move on

Everyone swears that the source material is an incredible and special story. I’m just curious as to when that’s gonna pop off.

LMFAO it was special to play it. To watch it 10 years later when in 2013 we had seen similar stories in tv and movies isn't the same magic as playing a story like that for the first time in a different medium

I HAVE ONLY POSTED IN THIS THREAD ONCE. I AM A BIG FAN OF THE GAMES. I THINK THE SHOW IS JUST OK. I AM NOT BLOWN AWAY BUT I AM ENJOYING IT ENOUGH TO KEEP TUNING IN. I WOULD LIKE MORE VIOLENCE, I BELIEVE IT TO BE A CRITICAL PART OF DEPICTING THE DANGEROUS NATURE OF THE WORLD THEY ARE NOW OCCUPYING. I ENJOYED BELLA RAMSEY'S PERFORMANCE THIS EPISODE. I THINK PEDRO PASCAL IS A FINE JOEL. HOWEVER, EVEN STILL, I FEEL LIKE SOME OF THE EMOTIONAL BEATS BETWEEN THEM FEEL RUSHED AND AREN'T QUITE MOVING ME AS I HAD HOPED, IN PARTICULAR THE CRITICAL DECISION JOEL MAKES TO GO WITH ELLIE.

the all caps but you true you are new here

Yea this is the point I was trying to make earlier lol . Just enjoy it for what it is instead of feeling like you have to compare it to the best shows ever or the best stories ever told

I think some people are holding themselves back from fully appreciating the show because they are thinking “well it’s not the Sopranos though” or “this isn’t the greatest thing ever like other people said”

Ellie's sad resignation to the fact another person is abandoning her is handled so much better imo. Running off and then clamming up. As is Joel's awareness of that. There's also the nice subtle surprise way in which Joel says 'im gonna hang onto this horse, Ellie give yours back'.

In the show it was very rushed through. Argument, two second dream sequence, then happy family all over again. Plus I didn't like that Joel says 'oh you can go with Tommy or me'. Giving that choice isn't the same impact as him making the decision wholeheartedly.

The preceding encounter with the raiders also entrenches the fact that this world is so dangerous and Joel finally accepts that he trusts himself above all to take care of her.

the choice is given to foreshadow the ending

I’m not rocking with that statement at all lol. so now it’s okay for violence to be in the video game but not in a “real” show?

That last weak ass neck snap before mans got gutted by a baseball bat. I get it.

    watch future seasons lol

    Synopsis

I mean you can say playing the game isn't an excuse but like, its hard to feel anything when you know the outcome lol. its the same as if i had played the game again lol im not going to feel it as much

Also, you kind of are saying he does need to be taking on raiders and s*** lol. because how did they create that feeling in the game? joel takes on a bunch of raiders until he gets caught off guard and literally is impaled by a pole

I've seen plenty of adaptations of novels/others games/plays that have still left an emotional imprint despite my awareness of the outcome.

Of course I'm saying there should have been more conflict than there has been. They haven't established that this is a violent, scary world effectively enough and that's why there's so little tension in encounters like this one.

Think about it: Joel taking on those raiders and getting impaled is the apex of danger that he will personally encounter in this season. And that was it??? No gunshots, no fear, no hiding about in the science lab, having to sneak through. In the game we would hear the enemy talking, calling us out, forming plans. In this, nothing.

We, as the audience, should be terrified of those raiders, we should be on the edge of our seat. I certainly wasn't. A pack of 4 guys with pipes turned up, one of them for some reason had strayed from his group, got his neck snapped in 2 seconds and had magically managed to shiv Joel. It was extremely anticlimactic. I didn't feel any tension whatsoever. I didn't really think of them as a credible threat once. I really don't feel much fear at all for Joel's survival. I didn't feel like Ellie really does. Her having to carry him out in the game was so significant and tense.

So far, if anything, Joel really is doing nothing to dispel the notion that he can't take care of Ellie effectively. He's barely had to fight anyone and when he does half the time they do seem to just get the jump on him out of nowhere. I'm not calling for him to be a superhuman am I. But he should feel tough and hardened and capable. I don't really feel that whatsoever because they've been so sparing with the violence.

Yeah like.. do they speak on why everyone went so militaristic? Is there a unified front against the infected?

I just feel like we keep hearing how bad ppl are now, I’m curious as to why.

They don't really explain it to my knowledge. There's 20 year gap. I imagine the government safezones just slowly overtime turned into the dictatorships that they are

The groups of humans that survive outside the safezones encountered hostile groups and that made them hostile. Kill or be killed

Again I think the 10/10, sweep the emmys, best hbo pilot ever, best debut season of a tv show, episode 3 is the greatest episode of television. Set them up for all this when I think its a good solid show. Good adaptation in many ways. The inevitability of some fans liking it and some not is just what happens. Especially when major changes are made to things like violence. Does it make sense that a 50 year old man is not performing a lot of those action sequences ? Yes. But going into it do I think many expected a lot more action drama balance ? Also yes or the violence to at least feel meaningful to the degree of some of those shows with older protagonist. Dwindling Sun is actually breaking it down pretty well while being respectful and not hating. I got to say that.

its easier to depict violence in a game when the characters can just tank bullets, craft med kits and find ammo everywhere lol

I am fine with this take I just want y'all to say this season 2 and 3 too

There is no way you didn't know this show was getting 10/10s and you just compare every show you watch to Breaking Bad, The Wire and Sopranos
