The boats slowly sail towards the cargo ship, you're now almost at it's side, the current is carrying you fast, so you either have to steer into the ship or find some other way to halt the boats.

The walls of the cargo ship are about 30 ft (9.1 meters) high above water, beneath the water it's another 10 feet.
It's about 400 feet (121 meters) long from rear to front.
As you near it you see that there are two ropes hanging down from the ledge you're heading towards, they look ripped, as if someone cut through them, there was probably a life boat attached to them once, you don't know how frazzled they are just by looking at them.
There's some clear marks of rust and tear of weather on the hull.
Algae are creeping up on the bottom part. There are several dozens of cargo containers towering on the ship's deck.

Everyone make a Nature (Intelliegence) Check (d20)
And discuss how you want to board the ship.

    1d20 = 15 + 4 (INT MODIFIER) = 19

You notice that some unusual and large marks on the ships hull below the water and a bit above the surface on several spots. Like it's been bent and dent by some kind of impact. It doesn't look like boats impacted it tho, more like as if some kind of huge fist punched against the damaged spots. There's also signs that this didn't happen all too long ago, as the algae didn't grow back over said marks.

Elori’s furrows his brow in worry, and relays this information to the group, without looking away from the area of concern.

“What could have caused those dents? Sharks and whales don’t swim in rivers... I hope these weirdos haven’t developed shark-hybrids as well.”

You could reach them, they're almost reaching to the water surface, maybe some meters above.

“We could climb those ropes to get up the ship, but keeping the boats still would be a problem. Can you guys do anything to stop us from moving? Can you still shape the earth, Elori?”

“When we approach the ropes, can you shape the earth to stop the boats from moving with the current? We can climb up once the boats are stable.”

    Just checked:

    Stone Shape

    Cooldown: 2 per Short Rest

You touch a stone object of Medium size or smaller or a section of stone no more than 5 feet in any dimension and form it into any shape that suits your purpose. So, for example, you could shape a large rock into a weapon, idol, or coffer, or make a small passage through a wall, as long as the wall is less than 5 feet thick. You could also shape a stone door or its frame to seal the door shut. The object you create can have up to two hinges and a latch, but finer mechanical detail isn’t possible.

Great idea, it would work cooldown wise, problem is Elori has to touch the stone/earth

    Yeah.

    But as I wrote before

The river is about 800ft / 250m wide.
It's about 200-240 feet / 60-73 meters deep, depending on where you're standing.

But that would mean youd need to take a dive to the bottom of the river to actually use the skill on the ground below.
I would allow you to stretch a rock from the bottom up to the surface, but Id say it would break really fast because of how thin and brittle it would be. It wouldnt hold more than a moment.

can’t i use tempestuous magic to get back on the boat/to touch the stone after i use a spell?

    "
    Tempestuous Magic

You can use a bonus action on your turn to cause whirling gusts of elemental air to briefly surround you, immediately before or after you cast a spell of 1st level or higher. Doing so allows you to fly up to 10 feet without provoking opportunity attacks."

So you'd dive down, cast the spell to make the stonewall appear and immediatly thereafter would need to activate tempestuous magic. The only thing this would do is catapult you to the surface faster (so you don't get dragged by the current that much). Still it's only 10 feet and the depth is 200 feet. So it would allow you to get back faster (and I'd allow you to make any saving throw against hazards that might come your way with advantage), apart from that there wouldn't be any difference.
