"The Beach Boys' 'Sunflower' Commercial and Artistic Flaw: No Mike Love Uptempo Rockers
20/20 had "Do It Again". Surf's Up had "Student Demonstration Time". Even the supposedly unique Pet Sounds had Mike Love lead vocals on almost half of the rock 'n roll vocal songs. Sunflower offered a rich tapestry of Beach Boys songwork and vocal excursions, except for the band's most important gift to the world: the uptempo Mike Love rocker."

Lowkey donāt disagree with this lol
Although Mike has the best song on the album in All I Wanna Do, guy literally invented Tame Impalaās discography with that track alone

the merit goes to brians songwritting and production for this song and its legacy, itās brians composition, mike love vocals (although for once beautiful and definitely one of his best) and penned lyrics arenāt key to it by any means
@RVI not sure why this punk album has a pet sounds cover but itās cool and maybe will feed your punk curiosity? itās from 1996

Did he actually write/produce this one? I seem to remember hearing that Brian was getting a lot of credit for songs he had very little input on, because Capitol wanted a certain % of tracks to have a Brian Wilson writing credit
I seem to remember that Brian obsessively wrote and worked on This Whole World and Good Time from these sessions

brian was very active post pet sounds up until after sunflower commercial flop - the myth of him being inactive after pet sounds reception is what it is: a romanticized myth
but yes he wrote lot on sunflower and more that didnāt make it, listen to this outtake heavily influenced by the beatles sheās leaving home, all brian and as inspired as pet sounds:

the capitol thing youāre referring to - not sure what it is from or about, maybe a confused timeline? because they did sign a contract late 70s with cbs records with a nice check in exchange of having brian commit to the albums for like 70% or something like that? which of course didnāt happen, well certainly not to what they esteemed and made a deal of
so that might be what you read about

hereās a beautiful song you might havnt heard brian did for his wife band in 1972 this is right around the corner of where production was changing and the work he did here is amazing, incredible balance of his usual stuff (notice like the little snare rolls during the verses, very brian arrangement and production like youd get on pet sounds) in a more.. airy almost prog style, only to switch back on very doowop classic brian choruses, great work and it is our best look at what couldāve been if brian hadnāt completely shut away during the 70s before the album love you ofc, wouldāve been perfect fit on surfs up tbh

i like this one better
