Keith Moons favourite song was Don't Worry Baby The Who were stans

oh boy, keith moon spent his entire life adoring the bbs up until his tragic death!

    roger daltrey recalls:

He was a mad Beach Boys fan.‹
He would have left the Who at the drop of a hat to join the Beach Boys. Even at our height, when the Beach Boys were on their way down and the Who were at the top of the world, if the Beach Boys had asked him to drum for them, he would have gone.‹
We used to do 'Barbara Ann' for Keith to keep him happy!

and this is not a joke: keith literally did wrote a letter to the band begging them to let him join the band!‹
they did in fact, way back in 1966 they recorded a cover of barbara ann and put it on their amazing ep “a quick one”

and the same year, bruce johnston visits the uk and sure asl doesn’t come empty handed: he brings along an early copy of pet sounds to show to keith and the fab fours

    bruce remembers:

another funny story from a keith moon biography:

There was a big outdoor concert in June 1972 at Crystal Palace Bowl in south London with Joe Cocker, Richie Havens, Sha Na Na and The Beach Boys. Keith “weaseled” his way onto the stage as M.C. for the day. This quote is from the book:

At the Crystal Palace Bowl, while the Beach Boys were soundchecking, Keith took Lenny Baker of Sha Na Na up in the helicopter, and discovered that its radio, interfering with the signals from an NBC crew filming a television special, was transmitting over the PA. Keith took this as an opportunity to fulfill a life-long dream and sing along live with the Beach Boys, who spent the entire time glaring at each other on stage trying to work out whose voice among the world’s most famous close-harmony group had suddenly veered so far out of tune.

and if you think that’s the end of it you’re wrong, keith REALLY loved them and as you mentioned loves the beautiful don’t worry baby, so much so that when he made his solo album in 1974, he recorded a cover of it

howard kaylan (singer of the turtles who is on this cover) described the album as "a fantasy record for him", allowing him to live out his fantasy to "be a beach boy”

(keith moon invited brian to his birthday - 1975)

fast forward to 1977 guess they had to keep playing barbara ann in order to keep him in the who as this video showcases much to roger daltrey amusing exasperation haha

but keith wasn’t the only one in the who to be an admirer

    pete townshend:

I love Brian. There's not many people I would say that about. I think he's a truly, truly, truly great genius. I love him so much it's just terrible – I find it hard to live with. 'God Only Knows' is simple and elegant and was stunning when it first appeared; it still sounds perfect.

i also think he is a big fan of smiley smile

    roger daltrey;

Brian deserves his place in the history books. The Beach Boys were one of the greatest groups ever full stop. And, in a way, probably under-appreciated. I really loved so many of their albums, so from that point of view, this is all a good thing, listening to it with fresh ears. I hold him in such awe that I get incredibly nervous when I meet him, but he's a really warm human being. Everybody identifies with his courage.

Yeah I have that EP and the Barbara Ann cover is atrocious in good spirits tho

You just gonna gloss over the fact that Moon thought Pet Sounds was a drag? he preferred the surf rock era

he also said some horrible things about pet sounds when it came out, that along with keiths comments ig does reflect some of the failure myths of the album at its release, altho ironicslly it was a a bigger hit in the uk

it was too new for them rock heads who just wants to make the same song every year

the who were hard ass r&b heads otherwise but yeah it was definitely a big step that wouldve taken a while to assimilate for some

mccartney was a pop dude already so it was easy for him
