Eh I think there's a lot orgin elements of this movie and story just not in a traditional sense and I think thats fine and desired tbh
Black panther for example is not an original story but has a lot of origin aspects to it
Black Panther goes out of its way to give us the basic essentials of T’Challa and Wakanda much like the rest of those films. The whole movie is teaching us about how the Black Panther mythos works. And he’s an outlier cause we got the death of his father as a major story thread in a billion dollar grossing Avengers film
Plus people cared way more about Black Panther as a character than Supergirl
That was a much different time, before comic book movies became a mainstay of pop culture. Also, all of those characters are not spin-offs of already established popular characters like Supergirl is.
That’s why I don’t think it would’ve made much of a difference if Supergirl was an origin film. The story being told wasn’t the issue, it was the lack of interest in the character in general
The lack of interest in the character in general is my point. That’s exactly what great origin films are for
We care too little about Supergirl to NOT do a straight origin film for her first real movie to general audiences

The movie was DOA after the first trailer came out. The story we got essentially functions as an origin anyway. It wouldn’t have made a difference if it was a full-fledged origin story, this was just the wrong creative team to make this movie, plus it was the wrong decision to have this be the follow-up movie to Superman
Yeah but I’m expanding it:
I don’t think he has to choose one or the other definitively, but I’d like to see an extended slate where he has no role other than the creative head of the studio.
Regardless of whether Supergirl (a movie I like mind you) was hurt by Gunn splitting attention between it and his own movie, I do think that in the long term it’ll prove to be a damaging strategy.
Yeah agreed. He’s gotta direct s*** like once very 5 years or something. Stick to Superman solo movies or something. He can’t talk this script s*** up and then go spend a year+ writing and directing MoT while supergirl goes through 3 composers and the director said he never read the comic on purpose lol
He has a unique style as a filmmaker but his style is not conducive to an entire universe of films
I’m still waiting to see what this universe looks & feels like without Gunn’s creative style heavily influencing it. Maybe Lanterns will be that first peek of it?
Lanterns and clayface seem like the first big difference in tone projects
To the “origin story” point, it feels like audiences wouldn’t have cared to watch this movie either way. Not every character is meant to lead a major film, it seems like Supergirl is just one of those for general audiences
It would have made a huge difference if it focused on being an origin film more than adapting a comic poorly . This is a movie where all we had seen of her was calling Superman a b**** . Which isn’t hugely marketable to kids or family people . Especially Toy Story week . Portraying her as an alcoholic edge lord who magically gains a conscious through her parallels with ruthye if fleshed out could be something reasonable but ruthye not a main character . Many of these characters in space we won’t see soon or again . So use space better to get her to that conclusion
weakening the hero to near death isn’t necessarily it and dog captured in peril back to back movies . It’s like having a love interest who keeps getting captured . It’s not like we see lead to believe she hugely cares about Eve dog at the beginning of the movie with her path of alcoholism and depression . It isn’t even like we are given the idea she is fighting it . So she been depressed for 10+ years alcoholism but the most you do to explore that is she finds a vengeful little girl with a dead family and sees what’s worth fighting for? As well as s\*\*\*trafficking of children which is kind of a background thing . Like she kills krem frees then but not returning them to family safety or stricture or that connection to them . Movie is baffling at times

I think a movie with a well written story does much better . The culture war arguments of people not liking Milly or what she says are solved by having a movie we want to support
this gonna be on Tubi by wednesday smh

Lanterns and Clayface would be a great start, but then we go back to a Gunn film… and then what? It’s looking kind of spooky.
After Man of Tomorrow the slate is barren, filled with a lot of maybes. It felt like Wonder Woman had the most momentum to go into production next, but with all the criticism for the Supergirl script, there’s a lot of (in fairness external) questions about Ana Nogueira.
At this point, it feels like Superman 3 would happen before anything else.

But whether the movie was well-written or not is something that no one would have known until after the movie released. Y’all keep failing to acknowledge that the interest for this movie was already extremely low months before it released. Supergirl is just not that popular

Yeah I have no idea, it’s honestly crazy that they don’t have another movie officially dated right now. The next film won’t be until 2028 at the earliest
Gunn is well overdue to release a new video detailing the upcoming DCU slate. Hopefully we get an updated release slate before the end of summer
It seems like the only news we get about potential upcoming movies is “we’re still ironing out the script, but things are still moving along” or “well the director is currently working on other projects, but we plan to meet with them soon to get some updates”
Honestly the longer they stall out Batman the worse its gonna get. They made green lantern a show and WW and Flash had flops 5 years ago.
At this rate with Gunn's philosophu, it would actually take forever to get to a sturdy Justice League movie.

I guess the equivalent from the dc end would be supergirl is an extension of Superman the movie and character. These krypton scenes was a way of exploring supergirl snd the overall kryptonian mythos.
But yeah people just cared more for BP than supergirl
This movie is gonna be so good
Post is almost at 300k likes.
Actually feel like the scales finally tipping towards DC.
Krypton flashback had me tearing up
Only part of the film that felt like it had real weight behind it, score was great during that sequence and I thought the acting was pretty great there too
This franchise is never getting off the ground tbh. It’s not the late 2010s anymore, people aren’t going to support these enough and just won’t be willing to invest in something like a phase 1 mcu comic book expanded universe ever again.
All we can hope for is good projects coming out of the whole endeavour (superman, lanterns probably, man of tomorrow hopefully)
Imagine thinking Gunn wasn’t highly involved
This isn’t a bad movie at all. It’s not a particularly excellent one either but the dc hate train really has this overblown.
Direction was pretty mid especially during action scenes. It really felt like a one two punch of mis aligned direction with a middling script that gave us this end result.
Final needle drop was fine would have rathered it was the real song or girls just wanna have fun but had yall not raised a fuss about it itt I prob wouldn’t have thought much about it
