It's based on a video game about an Italian plumber jumping on turtles and going through tunnels to try and save a princess
It's not impossible for a Mario movie to have a better story. We not talking "kino" level or anything

It's not but we're talking about a video game franchise that prioritized gameplay and charm over dialogue and story. A decent plot is already an improvement lol
I just don't understand the nitpicking, it seems like a lot of critics have unrealistic expectations for an animated movie. Most Mario games don't even have voiced dialogue (beside Sunshine)

this is the best selling animated movie of all time opening wise. animated movies have been bangers before. If you look at the original mario game I get you but over the series of Mario for the past 40 years they just had a lot they could take from to make a good story

Man why y’all doing this. The movie this is trying to be (Lego Movie) has source material with even less to make a story into - it’s a set of toys to build - and it has a right script, a great story, uses the source material in a meaningful way and actually has well rounded characters

Great point, I think The Lego Movie is an exception and tbh I don't really see a similarity between the two.
Saw this s*** wed and forgot i watched it a couple hours later. Visuals carried hard and it needed like an extra 15-25 mins. was not a fan of most of the voices especially cranky kongs 5.5/10
What a good way to spend Easter with this movie . It brought everyone together
wholesome
This s*** was fun, man. Loved seeing the whole universe on the big screen with such beautiful animation. Really got me in my feelings fr, kinda didn't realize how important the Mario games are to me. Excited to see more of them.

I don’t care, still could have been done better
Honestly you gotta have a heart of stone not to have had a blast watching this... nerds are never happy, let yourself go watching family film maybe your life won't be so miserable...
Movie looks kinda corny to me ngl. How is it
Wasnt that corny tbh. I could definitely delve into the world and buy into the story after the first few minutes

Facts a lot of miserable f***s here and elsewhere online. I enjoyed the movie and so did most viewers. It was a fun movie and I'm glad I went. Y'all need to take that stick out of your asses lmao
OK. I watched it.
As predicted, I can’t co-sign this.
However, it’s easy to see where the disconnect is coming from.
I think the imagery in the Mario games is so ubiquitous, so imaginative, so iconic… There’s a natural thrill to seeing the mushroom kingdom, finally, in all its glory. In presenting that, the film does a pretty good job. It IS quite kino at points. If that’s all you’re looking for, you’re going to leave satisfied.
However. In every other respect, this is an Illumination movie. It’s filled with cliched dialogue, cliched music cues, paper-thin characters, and yes, the plot feels like a speed run.
It’s got about as much weight as standing on a cloud. I would have gotten just as much, if not more, out of it, if it were a twenty minute short.
The Super Mehrio Bros Movie is a corporate product. It does what’s asked of it, but, in my opinion, it takes something unique and homogenizes it.
When you do that to a 🍄, I lose my appetite. I’m feeling…![]()

"Super Mehrio Brothers"
people that keep talking about the pacing and length of the movie, wdyw? a 2 hour (plus) Mario movie
This s*** is for little kids. They're not tryna be there all day
all these reviews and s*** from grown ass adults. No 8yr old is coming out the theater talking about pacing and s***
