Do you think maybe ktt is just old now maybe

KTT can be old but KTT can’t be so blind that they’re begging for the same rappers to be influential for multiple generations like THATS gonna save the genre

But what if I want it to be 2016 forever and ever

  • americana

Remember when these were the new guys and people were b****ing and moaning about them being influenced by Wayne/Ye and not Wu/Cube/Big?

today’s rappers weren’t 14 when these guys were around and popping, no s*** you won’t get this again

ehh i mean the rappers from that generation were also pulling influence from older gens too

that whole 2010s wave was very influenced by 90s rap

i think the problem is that they’re not really building off those foundations, it’s just stagnating

why would i listen to these various carti clones making worse versions of his music when i could just check out the real thing

Not asking for new artists to always be influenced certain generations

I just think it’s important for them to have taste

imo, the most interesting upcoming artists tend to have great taste in music (like lucy bedroque).

Like if ur not gonna be a student of past greats then at least develop good taste…

    Kanye had No ID
    Drake had Wayne

Do stuff like that still happen?

An actual answer is I don't think the last wave of popular artists are that much better than the new guys at anything to form this like deeper mentorship type of relationship when it comes to making music

Like what is the 2016 freshman class really going to teach any of the new artists that look up to them

so what you’re saying is that music is cooked

It’s really just this at the end of the day. Of course the easiest to make on average genre would suffer the most from that shift. Couple that with music being easier to make and any d***head with a mic being able to add their music to the pot and here we are.

  • eversince

so what you’re saying is that music is cooked

Maybe just like praising people for being cool/having good energy wasn't the best idea

But I also don't think music is in a bad place right now in general. Maybe rap is a little worse but I think it's not awful and it could easily get better if the right people get attention

it's that hypebeast era multiplied by shift in music consumption due to streaming/alghorithms

At some point it stopped being about developing taste, exploring different styles etc but rather about being "tapped in" at all costs and hyping whatever "next up" rageslop to come out

It just is what it is really lol

  • LaSean

Yall let all these mediocre niggas with mediocre music into the game that tell you out of their own mouth that they don't care about rap and this s*** is just a bag to them and then wonder why the s*** sucks now.

These niggas can't rap, nor are they song writers, they just care about fashion and auta farming.

    Bring back gatekeeping.

Also the pace of releasing music is hurting the genre too cause s*** isn't allowed to sit in the oven and cook properly cause niggas gotta compete with the algorithm to stay relevant so niggas keep releasing half baked projects.

I think the death of mixtapes has killed the genre too and Im talking bout real mixtapes when rappers rapped over other rappers beats

You are a saint for this comment

  • Jakarta Connect

    Hopsin?

Yeah I was 14 nigga, and wanted to be different

  • The s*** that scares me is the 2slimey type s***, I don’t enjoy that music at ALL, I don’t even get the appeal, the beats aren’t even that good either it’s just distortion, is this what this felt like when Yachty and all them came out? Lmao

  • Hullstar

Should the health of hip hop be determined by its mainstream popularity?

good question, I'd say generally no. however I'd say that when the only artists in the genre enjoying proper mainstream popularity are so far divorced from the ones that keep the genre alive it's unhealthy for the genre as a whole

  • eversince

idk if it's a real mentoring but Blackhaine has been part of Carti's team for some years now and ofc u have the whole wider opium crew as well

Everything went downhill once that got established

    This.

It made both artists and fans formulaic and it centralised popularity and money even more to a few artists at the top.

Music discovery is in the mud, playlists have taken over albums etc.
