Just wanna say that here it's not common for young people to have cars. I'm 23 and only two people I know from my age have cars. One guy because he's actually into cars and a girl because she's f***ing rich.
Here a car is like a house. You usually buy it when you are finally "adulting", in your late 20s. And it's an investment because it's VERY expensive.
where im from you get a car age 18 and you gonna struggle if you aint got one
Houston is incredible in a lot of ways but I know this video is gonna rip it rightfully for its bullshit sprawl/planning
Do you have any more videos/reads/books about public transit?
I tried to pursue urban planning because of my experiences with public transit and walking in another sprawling Texan city (Austin) but have become discouraged for multiple reasons. I absolutely love public transit though (I'm glad you mentioned the social aspect that comes with transit/walking vs how isolating cars are, public transit really opens you up to a wider world in ways I could talk about all day) and always want to learn more about it.
these have been recommended to me but I haven't bought them yet:
Triumph of the City: How Our Greatest Invention Makes Us Richer, Smarter, Greener, Healthier, and Happier by Edward Glaeser
Great Streets by Allan B. Jacobs
A Pattern Language: Towns, Buildings, Construction
Crabgrass Frontier: The Suburbanization of the United States by Kenneth T Jackson
The Death and Life of Great American Cities by Jane Jacobs

Last one is beyond a classic, thank you for the rest though
Reading about how GM bought and dismantled the entire LA rail system to pave it over for streets to sell their cars is one of the most disgusting things I’ve ever see
Any recommend reading on this?

you mean as a career? tbh I don't know what that field looks like as a career but I'm not opposed to it. I'm definitely interested in learning more about it though

A Pattern Language is a classic as it goes beyond Urban Design. I carry that book everywhere I move

My no driving ass has for sure seen this in Austin too though, had to jump in a ditch once to avoid getting run over once because I had to walk on a large stretch of road with no sidewalks smh
Those median grass patches are oasises to MFs like me
U had to jump in a ditch to dodge a car?

It doesn’t have to be. Either way I seen some nasty ass cars too.
As someone that has used public transportation reguarly and have driven regularly, I can safely say that I would much rather drive
This one guy was wealthy with bureaucrat parents, and even then his car was full of dried up stains and cigarette butts
as i get older, i think i disagree with this more and more. i live in Toronto in a very accessible area by public transit, and i've been using it regularly from when i was 12.
i'm 24 now and think the sheer flexibility of having your own car is so appealing. just being able to drive wherever, whenever, for any reason seems particularly liberating in a way that public transport can't compare.
