I mean Geoff has literally had inside scoop first look on this franchise since the first one so it makes sense

Good God it looks wild af from first glance at all the info.

thats why everyones frothing at the mouth for an announcement. we know specifics down to story areas, NPCs, vehicles, environments, etc. and it's been in consistent development for about 6 years.

It's nearly identical to how we knew about Alyx prior to its announcement/release.

I agree with you though that gossip/rumors were the only thing leading us to think it was being announced this year. Nothing concrete outside of a lot of insiders getting reports - which isn't nothing obviously but it's not enough imo.
