They only held that photo op in Kyiv so they could collectively call Trump to approve the unconditional request. They f***ed up not offering a time and a place for talks, and instead leaving room for Putin to do so. Now, if Istanbul happens again they let Turkey have power unintentionally.

Russia responded cleverly to let Trump not think they don’t want talks and flipped the convo back to Istanbul. Whether this ends in meaningful dialogue is besides the point for them the they’re not accepting anything that’s not 4 territories and Crimea at the bare minimum.

This process is useless in 2025. We missed key negotiating windows years ago. It’s either this ends militarily or one side is forced into uncomfortable agreements

I think its worth forcing the delegations to keep meeting tho. Negotiations take countless, brutal hours and this was their first time meeting in 3 years. If they do this while Zelenskyy, Putin, Trump, Witkoff, etc... continue their various schemes/meetings there may be a winner to that struggle which can tip the scales of talks.

issue is, i don't really understand what Ukraine's line is here. Wanting every piece back should be a goal but its a hard argument to make because if their baseline is no concessions then a compromise leaves them with giving up something

If Russia stayed at 4 regions maybe you can pull it down but the fact they're talking about "5 next time" assumes they expect to advance, strengthen their baseline demand, and then likely be negotiated down to the 4 they wanted anyways. Ukraine can't play this same trick

It's all still Biden's last drawdowns from January. Trump hasn't authorized new funding and congress is definitely not attaching Ukraine funding to legislations again as long as GOP is in. We'll have to see where things stand when the money actually dries up.
