I mean Russia getting crimea, the Russian provinces, and a neutral buffer state is a win in strategic sense

Ukraine losing the DonLu means losing most of its industrial power too

Ukraine is not gonna be "neutral" because in their view thats just russia wanting to recoup and get ready for another incursion. Ukraine would need a security guarantee

By imperialists do we mean the west?

japan is not the west. is turkey the west? saudi arabia sure isnt. imperialism is more complex than this simple geopolitical category.

we gotta stop using the term "the west". I find it has limited use.

my point is that if the end result of this is the preservation of the status quo, nobody will have won anything and both nations will emerge weaker.

Ukraine just gonna be Russia , when they pushed into the Russian border trying to take Kursk was a horrible strategic decision. The kremlin's response has been relentless since.

It's a given both countries will emerge weaker. They lost a s*** ton of young men

That has nothing to do with Kursk. In the long run Russia has more men, more weaponry, more bullets. It was kinda inevitable they would start to win land again. Ukraine has a shortage of everything basically, esp men

Russia won't be able to take the whole country tho

Russia has sacrificed a ton of future opportunity to invade Ukraine. Their wartime economy is going to evaporate as soon as peacetime is met, they've shown their military prowess to the NATO core, and their force projection onto Europe is going to be significantly weaker if the EU militarizes while they have to rebound.

They've gained a decent population, good resources, and optimistic industry from the land they've gained, plus stronger hold on the Black Sea, but they haven't occupied a lot of the cities that's shown on the map.

Ukraine is completely f***ed either way.

The only state or population I can imagine benefiting from this terrible conflict in any degree is, funnily enough, North Korea lol.

    What makes u say that

its all going to depend on how sustainable these relations with russia actually are. I dont expect they would have exported all this military hardware to not get something good in return.

    • Their soldiers gain very valuable modern combat experience, which NK and the PRC sorely lack, even if they're only situated in a support role under Russia's chain of command. There's very little being sent as well, so little manpower lost.

    • Closer relations to Russia as their ties to the PRC have weakened over time due to a lack of angular pressure from NATO in the region for a long time.

    • Resources (food, oil, etc.), technology, and whatever else promised as part of this deal.

NK is already an international pariah with little risk of losing trade deals or being threatened by sanctions as well, so they're pretty much at worst coming off neutral. That's my expectation at least.

BBC - Russia says Ukraine has fired US-supplied long-range missiles into the country, a day after Washington gave its permission for such attacks.

Ukraine used the Army Tactical Missile System (Atacms) in a strike on Russia's Bryansk region this morning, the ministry of defence in Moscow said.
Five missiles were shot down and one damaged, with its fragments causing a fire at a military facility in the region, it said.

The strike represents the first time the long-range missiles have been used on Russia's internationally-recognised territory after Washington signalled Ukraine had permission to do so. Russia has vowed to "react accordingly.”

AP - President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday formally lowered the threshold for Russia’s use of its nuclear weapons, a move that follows U.S. President Joe Biden’s decision to let Ukraine strike targets inside Russian territory with American-supplied longer-range missiles.

The new doctrine allows for a potential nuclear response by Moscow even to a conventional attack on Russia by any nation that is supported by a nuclear power.

Russia’s Defense Ministry said Ukraine fired six U.S.-made ATACMS missiles early Tuesday at a military facility in Russia’s Bryansk region that borders Ukraine, adding that air defenses shot down five of them and damaged one more.

While the doctrine envisions a possible nuclear response by Russia to such a conventional strike, it is formulated broadly to avoid a firm commitment to use nuclear weapons and keep Putin’s options open.

I’m worried that they’re attempting to escalate things to a point that makes any potential peace talks Trump might pursue impossible

peace talks arent unpopular even among the ukrainian government/army so Zelensky surely needs this to keep going more than anyone else. wouldnt be surprised if he leaves ukraine after that happens. Putin might realize that as well hence him doing mostly the same s*** eg 'small-time' bombings and a bit of nuclear finger wagging. dont see him using NK soldiers as anything other than gaining a bit of support at home and using his NK diplomacy points
