I wish we could have an ideological debate thread and keep this one focused on the situation in Ukraine

Cause let's be real opinion on the war in Ukraine isn't just 'communists, pro Russian alt right vs libs and azov' is it

You don't have to be a globe emoji lib to think allowing russia to just grab half of Ukraine is a bad idea and sets an awful precedent for the world, and Europe just as you don't have to be a Russian shill to be cautious in support for ukraine

Also plankton js being a bit of a waste man now but I guess he's similar to how i was 2 years ago

tf are you talking about? I'm just making my case same as anyone else.

I agree, we shouldn’t have to re-litigate communism after it failed for the whole world to see, but it is relevant seeing as the communists support Russia trying to get the old band back together, and that’s 100% of what this war is about. So it is relevant.

They dint support Russia they just struggle to see the western worlds geopolitical interest aligning with rhe just course of action. It's unprecedented in their eyes

Though I agree if stalin was around and did what putin was doing in Syria they'd call it an emancipation

If that was the case they would just say that. Instead they use the Russian talking points of “the war is about Russian minorities in the east” and “NATO expansion” when in reality the war is 100% about Russian expansionism and revanchism.

the issue is that in any form of discussion and action things inherently become aligned through partisanship (not US political partisanship - just general partisanship as an idea). like yes pragmatism and nuance exist but they exist in more theoretical form, in terms of broad action or discussion it's impossible to differentiate away from partisanship. It's easier to discuss or devolve into discussion over ideology because it forces a pivot where people can differentiate themselves from otherwise standard partisanship

Especially when you have an inherently ideological conflict like the Russia-Ukraine war.

We're definitely past the point for creative deals or even traditional negotiations. Russia has no incentive to negotiate unless it meets their demands..... which is in effect a Ukrainian surrender. Biden hinted a while ago they don't yet have a great negotiating position and Ukraine tells us all the time they won't negotiate unless they gain all the lost ground back (lol).

I know he got blowback for the concessions comment but Kissinger's point on the time window aspect seems correct. He said 2 months ago:

“Negotiations need to begin in the next two months before it creates upheavals and tensions that will not be easily overcome. Ideally, the dividing line should be a return to the status quo ante,”

Well here we are months later and Russia is close to completing the battle in Donbass, Lavrov is confirming Russia is ready to expand the war even more, the nation is comfortably shutting the EU from energy and the IMF just came out and said Russia's economy is doing better than expected
