Did the USSR win in Afghanistan?

So you think arming multiple fundamentalist militias in my home country to destroy a government that was actively building infrastructure and educating its population to dunk on the USSR was a good move? My country was plunged into 40 years of war where hundreds of thousands died thanks to the US deciding to give billions to the mujahideen

    How is that a win?

I could’ve lived peacefully and prosperously back home in Afghanistan if it wasn’t for the US

It led to the USSR collapsing freeing 10s of millions from communist oppression

No. The US gave to Afghan Mujahideen, not foreign Mujahideen like Bin Laden. Plus, we didn't know they were gonna turn against us in the 80s.

As far as I know the 'Arab Afghans' were also trained in Pakistan, like many of the Afghan Mujahideen. And the USA partially sponsored them. Also associates of Bin Laden received funding

Either way it's dumb to say supporting the Mujahideen was pro-Bin Laden. No one knew he was gonna do 9/11 back then, and he still would've attacked the USA anyway

You realize the reason the mujahideen rose up against the afghan government was because they attempted to institute peasants rights and education for women right …. These were regional warlords who owned farms and mills who didn’t want their power usurped so they pushed the fundamentalist and religious angle by pointing out the push for womens rights

There’s quite a few senate reports from the 1980’s talking about how funding these people was dangerous

Maybe it had to do with foreign occupation?

By this logic you should never ally with someone who might be your enemy later

It’s wrong to send weapons to political entities that go entirely against your ideals just so you can dunk on a competitor

the communist government at the time was not supported by the USSR. It was only after the mujahideen uprising that a pro-Soviet countercoup occured

I wish we could have an ideological debate thread and keep this one focused on the situation in Ukraine

Cause let's be real opinion on the war in Ukraine isn't just 'communists, pro Russian alt right vs libs and azov' is it

You don't have to be a globe emoji lib to think allowing russia to just grab half of Ukraine is a bad idea and sets an awful precedent for the world, and Europe just as you don't have to be a Russian shill to be cautious in support for ukraine

Also plankton js being a bit of a waste man now but I guess he's similar to how i was 2 years ago
