La FlamePND and Bryson has influenced way more when it comes to sound.
It is tougher to compare Frank to anyone and maybe says something about him as well. More unique and more of a musician, when compared to his peers.

I don’t even love their influence on the genre cause i think it caused a lot of vapid copycats (4Batz etc) but you can definitely draw a through line from them to modern rnb better than from frank

i honestly think part of it is because he disappears for like ten years at a time, so this whole mysterious art-boy aura forms around him. meanwhile the weeknd is out here constantly evolving, dropping albums every 2-3 years, doing massive tours, changing eras like outfits, and despite releasing way more music, the quality really isn’t that far behind frank’s at all.
lowkey, i think consistency is part of artistry too. being able to repeatedly make great music without vanishing into the ocean for a decade is its own talent. the weeknd manages to stay mainstream while still making atmospheric, cinematic, emotional music. frank might feel more “special” to some people, but that doesn’t automatically make him leagues above everyone else.

“the weeknd hasnt evolved musically” takes always confuse me bc what 😭
listen to house of balloons then listen to dawn fm and tell me thats the same artist. early weeknd was all dark minimal alt rnb super d***gy and emotionally detached sounding. then he slowly moved into synthpop, new wave, stadium pop, disco influences, cinematic production etc without fully losing his identity
and honestly thats harder than ppl make it seem. a lot of artists “evolve” by completely changing who they are every era. abel evolved while still sounding like himself
after hours and dawn fm especially feel way more ambitious structurally too. transitions, storytelling, concepts, vocal control, production quality, all of it leveled up hard compared to trilogy era. dawn fm literally feels like some weird existential radio station in purgatory at 3am
people just ignore his evolution bc he became mainstream. for some reason once an artist gets huge ppl start acting like experimentation only counts if ur underground and mysterious lol
