I wouldn’t say that switching sound is evolving. I think his older music was way more true to himself than his new stuff. Lyrically and vocally.

It matters that he starting working with Max Martin among others, and really shooting to become a big star. Nothing wrong with that and was probably what he was supposed to do.
But as far as I know. Frank artistry as a musician and pen is just a bit different.

It's really hard to argue that he has evolved when he literally invented a whole unique sound, which no one was coming close to doing & got really popular off it. And then decided to throw that out of the window & start trying to sound a lot more like every other pop artist/music from the past.
Everything about The Weeknd's last 3 projects is replaceable by other artists. Nothing about his first 3 was replaceable. That's what people mean.
