lol no worries man.
seen it 2x in 3 days and my head is still spinning. i was caught in the spectacle the first time and am just now starting to be able to digest so much s*** that didn't hit me on then. i'll no doubt be hopping into the convos like this soon, still digesting.
movie definitely had a lot to say; i hope to have something to add soon.
might need a rewatch soon too
I know PTA doesn't do director's cut but I kinda want one for this. I'm sure there were more scenes with Deandra, Will and the revolutionary nuns that were just cut out for pacing. I wanted to see more of that and Junglepussy playing herself lol
I do think theres a lot there to Teyana's character and the discourse is valid. If the film just had a black fetishist white supremacist it would be a lot cleaner (not in a good or interesting way). the fact Teyana engages sexually with him is so messy, layered, icky and interesting from a writing perspective that i'm not surprised theres a lot of people talking about it.
Teyana’s just hooking up with some random guy, we don’t know until later that he has a disgusting fetish and is part of a white supremacist group.

?
She captures him at the camp in the beginning first
"historically speaking, the white male has been the default for a hot minute in terms of homogeneity in media and grace extended to them"
Not in Paul Thomas Anderson films at all (the guy who wrote Perfidia) idk why you speaking on general terms as if he was responsible for the "homogeneity" and grace given to male characters
And If "sexually perveted freak" has a negative connotation for you, then that's on you champ
I had to zoom out to show a pattern. You taking what I'm saying as an attack on PTA when we were talking about white actors, and all im tryna do is explain why some folks might feel a way about the trope they're catching onto here, whether it was unintentional or otherwise on PTA's part. I am not telling you or anyone itt how to feel.

Yeah the scenes where we learn about lockjaw’s character are after that
If anything it felt like an accurate portrayal of black women’s experience, she didn’t know and likely never would have hooked up with him if she did , that’s what I assumed. The p**** don’t pop for you note could’ve been after she realized.

Did you watch the film

Yeah but he's not just a random guy, it's still her enemy and knowing he's some military hotshot, likely a right wing hick too
How is Mystic River? First movie that popped up when I searched bout Sean Penn. Looking interesting
not seeing the Assata parallels tbh, seems like the biggest connection is with the release of the movie and Assata's passing
maybe Taylor drew inspiration from her, but aside from being a black female revolutionary, how are they similar? they had different causes, storylines, and eras
Perfidia was based on the character Frenesi from Pynchon's Vineland. that character was white but also highly sexualized and used her sexuality as a weapon the same way we saw in OBAA
I don't see the connection either tbh. I don't even think this film is political like that. It's more like an action dramedy, with family drama at the core.
Did you watch the film
Are you f***ing slow? The person I responded to said it was messy she hooked up with this white supremacist who fetishizes black women but both of those reveals come after they f***? It felt like that was purposeful and it represents the danger that white men pose to black women

I think you need to watch the movie again
I think you need to watch the movie again
Explain then if you’re so smart and watched this movie so well that you understand it better than me
my bad, I thought you were throwing indirect shots when we should all be able to have a polite discussion about the film.
I also really liked it lol I'm conflicted about it overall but still enjoyed it. it was really refreshing to see gen z portrayed in a more hopeful and empathetic light in a political satire for once.
Liked it too but niggas is allergic to anything that's not unanimous praise
I think there's real ambiguity as to how much Perfidia actually wanted to f*** Lockjaw. Ambiguity is what makes the character interesting.

Watched it as a kid. I remember f***ing with it. Sean Penn was pretty good. One of Clint Eastwood's better films of the 00's

That’s fair but I still think it intentionally messies up and muddies the character a lot. But these are things I like and think are super interesting, worthy of thought and are bold swings. If she just got assaulted by someone we find out is a white supremacist, I think the film gets a bit less interesting.

That’s super true. The first meeting could be seen as her enjoying cutting him down, taking power away, being in the dominant position. And then the full s***I believe was basically under him saying if you don’t meet me at the hotel room, I’ll ruin your whole operation and all of their lives, and so is muddy it’s own right. She takes charge of that sexual interaction but maybe it was her way of surviving, if she doesn’t take charge and dominate him, it would be straight up coercive s***or rape.

Nah you’re totally right, I guess it’s just the extent of how evil he is that slowly unravels, but yeah I probably would’ve guessed a few of those things just from him being a military guy. I guess he just seemed like more of a wild card that could’ve gone anywhere at first, possibly even flipping to join the 45, until they really build out his character with that scene in the grocery store and of course the Christmas meeting
might need a rewatch soon too

we gonna NEED more from him lol.
this movie is gonna end up in the conversation imo

Lmao random bro?
Lmao random bro?
I just mean she doesn’t know anything about him, like he’s a stranger.
It feels like a commentary about how white men pose this possible danger to black women, of course if she had known he was some psycho white supremacist who would hunt down their biracial daughter she never would’ve smashed, but she doesn’t know that at the time. It feels like a really potent commentary on the real unknown danger that white men possess.

Cmon bro. She knew exactly who her enemy was.
She loved being in control over her enemy. Once she got caught and lost control, that’s why her “pussy don’t pop for you” anymore came about.
