I honestly just think it’s overrated. The writer tried harder to make a simple message obvious so clips could be used by the “yas queen” crowd while also being clever enough so that critics feel validated enough to rave about it. As a whole it’sa decent movie, but i know there was a better script from the other nominees like nomadland

Every male character was complete garbage, no one except maybe her dad was even remotely redeemable

And plenty of women see all men that way but it comes off as disingenuous to me if she's trying to have a legitimate discussion about gender relations

I actually thought it was a pretty good movie, I loved Carey in it, I thought it was well edited, good cinematography and had nice music cues

The third act of Promising Young Woman was terrible but there were good things about it as a whole

It's one of those movies where I think the director fell in love with their protagonist and thought they were noble when really I didn't see them that way at all

I applaud the dialogue The film was trying to have about rape culture but I wasn’t entertained. That’s the bottom line of all my complainants. I saw Black Messiah right after PYW and realized you can make an entertaining movie, an educational film, and an artistic film all in one and under 2 hours

It depends on who you're trying to reach IMO

If you're speaking to other women then I think it's an effective device because it's shorthand for things they already know

If you're trying to get the male portion of your audience to see your perspective and think differently about an important issue then maybe not

Either way I don't think it's a bad movie at all just a flawed one

The point of ending the film before the big text reveal was to show that women really don’t receive justice in the world but the producers said that was too dark to turn a profit.
