The pandemic definitely plays a role. People are too distracted by COVID to keep up with the latest music and the lack of touring makes newer acts feel less visible.

Another factor is that the media has become completely decentralized, especially after 2017. The radio mostly plays old hits from the past while only a couple of newer hits like "Peaches", "Blinding Lights" or "Positions" gets regular spins. The radio used to play far more contemporary hits in the past. Also, TV is almost dead due to Hulu, Netflix, and Youtube which also decreased the visibility of artists to different demographics. And Youtube used to promote the latest music videos all the time but that's changed in favor of "current events."

Yes. Quality might somewhat play a role but COVID and the whole way music today is consumed changed everything.

I remember when Youtube used to post the latest music videos from major artists daily on the front page.

Now, you have to already have it in your algorithm for it to show up. I remember seeing videos like "Humble", "God's Plan", "Life Is Good", "Despacito", etc. on the front page on Youtube and everyone could just click on it and check it out.

Now, you really have to go searching for the latest s***.

Older music comes from a more rebellious culture which people want to live through. I remember in middle school a lot of kids who won’t listen to pop or rap music we’re listening to rock and metal from decades prior.
