I just don't feel like there's hits like that anymore. Last time of that era was like in 2015/2016. Pop music isn't hitting everywhere as hard and you can tell.

You use to hear certain new s*** EVERYWHERE in the cars, stores, barbershops etc. now it's just a mix of old s***.

Also for me personally I've just been mainly listening to old s***, I still listen to whatever drops and some of it gets in the playlist but most of it is old s***. I think the pandemic made a lot of people nostalgic in a way (or more jaded at the current market of artists idk )

My theory is not that music is getting worse. More so, music is often tied to what you were doing and how you were living when it dropped. So it has a nostalgic quality to it. At least for me. Now in the past 18 months, most people have been going out and doing very little or living very redundantly during the pandemic. So it’s hard to develop a strong attachment to new music in some regards. Music is like life soundtrack sort of s***. But most people’s life movie the past 18 months has been very non existent since the pandemic. Additionally, maybe there’s also a phenomenon to revisit music to escape being in the pandemic bubble and go back to normal times mentally. Idk, just thinking outside of the box because I don’t want to just say new music sucks.

Most normal people don’t keep up with new releases unless it’s a huge artist.

And on top of that most people listen to the same s*** for years, so this isn’t very surprising.

This is also at a bit of an impasse where the most popular musicians from when we grew up either make music a lot less or are retiring, so you pretty much have to discover new artists, which most people aren’t interested in until they’re already popular.

Makes sense and it's a good thing. If most of music consumption was new music then that would mean that a lot of music was forgotten soon after it dropped ("came and went") and consumers would just be mindlessly listening to the newest songs without developing personal taste

One interesting point that y'all aint thinking is that streaming is becoming more and more accessible, like in the past my father would mock me for streaming and in the past year he decided to buy a streaming subscription just because he admitted that its a hassle to put a cd anytime he wants to hear a song. I can see a bunch of old people getting into streaming sooner or later wich will cause a even bigger rise in old music streaming
