I said I wouldn't do it and yet.....
I dropped $4000 on a laptop to beat the tariffs...
Upgrading from a 3070 8GB(more like a 3060 TI) to a 5090 24GB(it's more like a 4080/5070)
Did it as a treat to myself to push me to complete the upcoming busy schedule I have
It'll be fun having a laptop that's more than twice as powerful as my last one but realistically I could already play every game fine, am I an empty trying to use a material purchase to make myself feel something?
yeah probably but f*** it enjoy the laptop and the games man
assuming you financially settled in a spot where the $4,000 doesnt hurt you its good to enjoy some self love
already built everything, got the 9800x3d and 7900xt
post guts
what game did you play first?
built mine in 2020 and had 0$ leftover so played what i already had from high school, so booted up team fortress 2 immediately

It's been sitting next to me for 3 days and I haven't even turned it on yet, I feel like I don't deserve it
my current 2nd slot SSD that I'll would be carrying over to my new laptop is a 1TB MLC (super durable) PCIE 3 SSD
Although I have at times run into space issues (I had other storage externally but convenience)
I can get a 4TB 990 Evo Plus (so it would have PCIE 4 speeds) for $110 bucks straight from Samsung, should I do this or am I being greedy?
I would also get a $50 dollar USB4/TB4 enclosure for my MLC SSD to use it as a reliable external SSD
Are these good ideas or am I being greedy?
Main storage uses internally & externally are media backup, games, Ableton projects (& perhaps Cubase projects too, if I start using it for mixing to leverage my new processor better) 4K UHD movies, TV shows that aren't readily available online, memories etc,
I keep my non-streaming music library pretty lean these days (sub 100GB if possible)

Better play some games this weekend or else

Played a bit
I went from running Cyberpunk at 1080p with barely any raytracing on my old one to now
Running it at 4k with Path Tracing on, working flawless
But it was still the same game... was it worth it?
& now I have to use Windows 11 & move all my stuff and reinstall 100s of things
Also, tried Nvidia Frame Generation for the first time and I was not moved at all
Maybe I'm latency sensitive?

Ayyyy. I mean if it truly doesn't feel worth it don't keep it. But if its more you just feeling guilty for spending money on yourself, then I think you should just enjoy it. Even if all there is to enjoy is "just" the hardest game to run in 4k with tracing on lolol
i got 15 emails today that 5090 are in stock
guess nvidia unleashed the supply of them
Got an i7-12700k with a 1070 rn and my gpu been crashing heavy… any recommendations for a replacement GPU? Cant even play marvel rivals my s*** lags like crazy

depends how much you wanna spend
you could get a RX 7600 XT 16GB or a RTX 5070 12GB

Rather go the cheaper route. Rx 7600 way cheaper but is it just as good?

yes either will work with Intel no issue
outside of the RX 7600 xt having more vram it’s worse in almost every single way
the RX 7600 xt is closer to a 4060 or 4060 ti so it’s 2 tiers slower than the 5070 probably 55-65% as fast depending on the game and settings
i was recommending something that you can buy new that wasn’t like approaching $600+ lol
depends on your budget but either would be a massive upgrade over your current card though
anything AMD RX usually gets you a cheaper price and more VRAM but at the cost of a lot worse AI upscaling and ray tracing cores
if you went used there are some good deals on eBay but then you don’t get a warranty but a RTX 3080 12GB is a pretty good deal these days

what resolution and refresh rate is your monitor
and do you plan to replace it in the next couple years

144hz 1920x1080… and no I don’t
144hz 1920x1080… and no I don’t
a lot of games will run that resolution and frame rate easy on the RX 7600 xt like Marvel Rivals, most other titles but certain newer games with lots of ray tracing like Cyberpunk, Indiana Jones, Red Dead 2 and future games like GTA 6 won’t run at 144fps they’ll be more like 60fps
if you wanted to turn stuff up in those kinds of games you’d have to go with a RTX 5070 or RTX 5060TI 16GB
whatever you do don’t buy any GPUs with 8GB in 2025 it’s already obsolete

yeah i’d avoid, the trouble is if you run out of VRAM the game runs like ass, consoles all have 16GB. you already have a 8GB card and it’s 9 years old.
having more RAM doesn’t make stuff faster unless you’re out of RAM than it will be multiple times faster 10x in some cases.

that’s my issue rn. 8 gb and gpu is shutting out on lowest graphic settings not sure how to fix don’t wanna get a new gpu for nothing

yeah you will run out of VRAM in some new games especially in coming years but multiplayer games like Marval Rivals are designed to run on old stuff like the GTX 1070
you sure you aren't having a driver issue or out of RAM? you might just need another stick or two of RAM
is the computer crashing like going to blue screen or the app just dying? if the app is just dying you can keep task manager open with the resource monitor and try to see if your RAM was maxed when it crashed
you could also use a tool like this

if I had to guess I'd almost assume a RAM issue not a VRAM issue just cause Rivals at 1080p low settings should only use like 6GB of VRAM
your system might just be pushing its RAM limit, these newer games use more RAM than old ones.. 24GB is recommended these days

The ram is at like 60% the GPU IS at a consistent 99-100% tho on task manager, when gaming this game particularly

okay so it sounds like it isn’t a RAM issue then
that’s normal for the GPU to be at 100% in a lot of games what’s the GPU memory or VRAM at though
