if you want to practice a D dorian scale you have to start on D and play up to the next D using the notes of a C Major scale (D-E-F-G-A-B-C-D) there's only 1 D dorian scale and it's this one, similarly to how there's only 1 C major scale or E Major scale right? Now if you were going to deliberately use this mode in a song or solo you'd typically use when you're soloing in a song that's written in D Minor. This sounds really f***ing dumb but read lol

to "build" the mode you start on the 2nd note of a C Major scale and then just play that scale right? Well if you look at the notes of that mode (D-E-F-G-A-B-C-D) it's almost identical to a D Minor scale right? (D minor: D-E-F-G-A-Bb-C-D) and the reason why you'd use this scale in a D minor song is because the triad/chord you form in this mode is a D minor chord

the way you decipher when and where to use this mode traditionally is by building a triad on the starting note of that mode, With D Dorian it's D minor because the first chord you build is a D Minor chord, if you do F Lydian, the first chord you build is an F Major so you'd use this mode in a song that's written in F major.

Tell me if this is correct or not, I choose a key. I pick a pentatonic position and start on that root note. I then play that position down, back to back. until ive reached the end of the fretboard.
