@Echiham
he wants me to practice these pentatonic scales on the right up and down the entire fret board over a backing track. i don’t understand how that’s supposed to work. do i just pick a key, (lets say C) and just pick a random mode? do all the modes work? will i stay within the key if i dont change the mode? i have so many questions. i am lost!!

alright so regardless of whether you're in a major or minor key you have your 8 notes that form that scale you already know what a C major scale is all the white notes of a keyboard from C to C an octave higher. All a "mode" is, is playing the EXACT same scale but you start on a different degree of the scale. So for example, if you play a C major scale and start on C and then play the full scale you have a basic C major scale. Now if you just move over 1 note higher and start on D and play the C major scale (D-E-F-G-A-B-C--D) you have a mode which is called "Dorian". I can get into where and when you would use this mode and the others but then you'll need to refer to more music theory so it might become complicated/overwhelming.
If you start on ANY degree of the scale regardless of the chord progression and just play that scale for instance C Major you'll be alright

So, if i’m looking to practice a D dorian, i don’t necessarily start that scale on D? i don’t understand where and when these modes are applicable lol

if you want to practice a D dorian scale you have to start on D and play up to the next D using the notes of a C Major scale (D-E-F-G-A-B-C-D) there's only 1 D dorian scale and it's this one, similarly to how there's only 1 C major scale or E Major scale right? Now if you were going to deliberately use this mode in a song or solo you'd typically use when you're soloing in a song that's written in D Minor. This sounds really f***ing dumb but read lol
to "build" the mode you start on the 2nd note of a C Major scale and then just play that scale right? Well if you look at the notes of that mode (D-E-F-G-A-B-C-D) it's almost identical to a D Minor scale right? (D minor: D-E-F-G-A-Bb-C-D) and the reason why you'd use this scale in a D minor song is because the triad/chord you form in this mode is a D minor chord
the way you decipher when and where to use this mode traditionally is by building a triad on the starting note of that mode, With D Dorian it's D minor because the first chord you build is a D Minor chord, if you do F Lydian, the first chord you build is an F Major so you'd use this mode in a song that's written in F major.
The gramps must be walking
TLDR: the mode is applicable to whatever tonality the first chord is, D Dorian is D Minor, E Phrygian is E minor, F Lydian is F major, Mixolydian is G Major, A Aeolian is A Minor
