understandable, like the way I tend to go about it if im trying to improv is I utilize the pentatonic (aeolian) and blues scale quite a lot. So if the backing track would be say in C major I'd just start where the root of it is (on the E string it'd would be 8th fret) and apply the scale from there.

BUT it can sometimes not sound good depending on the style of song and then I just tend to try and play what "sounds right" to it and figure it out as i go with the song this is just my "ear experience" covering my lack of knowledge tho
