How long does it take to get noticeable gains/increases in max/reps for an absolute beginner?
I’m a shorter guy at 5’6” and I dropped from 180 to 145 last year, popped up to 158 at the beginning of 2026 and now down to 143.
Since January, I’ve been hitting the gym 5-6x a week, originally doing 45 mins of full body and 20-30 mins cardio. Now doing a PPL split and 20-30 mins cardio. I had to take 2-3 weeks off in February due to a bad flu which made me feel like I lost some progress. But overall my progress feels marginal, aside from leg press I’ve only moved up a rung or two on machines. Is that normal? For reference I could only bench like 60lbs with consistency and now I can do about 80.
I admittedly have lower muscle/higher body fat so I look 20lbs heavier than my weight. And I’m guessing I lost even more muscle during my weight loss since I did almost no strength training.
You get the mental results almost immediately and every day after.
real humbling to see how much I was overtraining before. Reduced my cardio intensity and not moving as much but seeing much better results fat burning wise.
the amount of cortisol I must’ve been generating
it almost feels too easy now but it’s good to know I just gotta be more patient
Seen or heard the word cortisol about 100 times in the past few months but this was the post that made me look up what it mean 😊
Been saying what?
Most people be doing too much. Overtraining.
Work smarter not harder
But also don’t be a p****
if you take electrolytes while working out add salt to it so when your pissing like a fire hydrant your not pissing all your minerals away
what were you doing wrong?
a lot of zone 3-4 late at night (8-9pm). This was on top of 10-15k steps on most days. I wasn’t eating enough protein to compensate and my macros after the workout weren’t ideal for recovery. Since it was close to bed as well I wasn’t sleeping the best since my cortisol was elevated. The negative effects got compounded by one thing after another

i was reluctant as well as I know it is a tiktok meme but it caused so much inflammation and water retention for me. I fixed it and dropped so much water weight bro 😭

that is why i like working out mid day 1 pm then go to work after wards even though sometimes its a pain in the ass to get up and go to the gym, after the gym i walk a lot at work get my steps in then when i come home i take a shower and sleep right away
Zink on a empty stomach
i take zinc magnesium b6 sometimes on a empty stomach before bed because at night as a type 1 diabetic if i eat my blood sugar will be high in the morning so a good 12 hr fast is great for me does taking zinc bother you on a empty stomach ?
Lost so much weight gona have to start doing weighted calisthenics so that I’m moving the same weight
does everyone agree here that most people who workout in the gym are bald ?
I’m bald and no
