    Synopsis

So I'll break down the synergy numbers again since you already showcased tatums numbers in these other categories. Overall on defense, Tatum allows .848 ppp, and is in the 85th percentile overall. This actually beats out Jimmy, who is in the 78th percentile, and it is astronomically better than Paul George this year, who is in the 36th percentile (terrible). Also beats out Ben Simmons in PPP allowed. I'm not going to compare him to a guy like Tucker with these numbers because they occupy vastly different roles, but compared to other wing defenders considered elite, tatum beats them in looking at the overall picture. He's in the 92nd percentile guarding pick and roll ball handlers. He's 6th among all wing defenders in Defensive real plus minus (not a perfect stat, ranks duncan robinson and joe ingles really highly, but when you constantly rank well in advanced metrics it means something).

    !https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bdr3h7YvkSE&t=464s!https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kj1lIciCFpM!https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qms8141Jy3s!https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jTsupXo7svE

i think he's clearly elite in the passing lanes and on the ball. plus just watching games, he's very rarely out of position on help and its been this way since last season. now he's stronger and more consistent so he guards players like kawhi much better. so if we're just looking at this season, i think its not a stretch at all to say he's been one of the handful of the best wing defenders.

If you look at the individual stats I used... Butler is ahead of Tatum in all of them and way ahead of him in some... look at his contested shots and defensive %'s... players shoot 31% from 3 against him and 32% from midrange... He also averages 1.8 steals per game and 3.4 deflections per game.

I'd add Jerami Grant to that list over Tatum as well.... he has some ridiculous numbers... opponents shoot significantly worse everywhere when he's guarding them... 29% from 3 and 29% from midrange.

PJ's the guy we usually send primarily at LeBron, Kawhi, heck also Tatum and other star wings... Him or Covington take turns... I counted Tucker because we switch everything and he guards out on the perimeter even more than he does inside depending on the matchup... Given how many 3s he contests I think it's fair to consider him a wing defender.

PPP, defensive rating, RPM, etc.... Advanced defensive stats like that are affected by your teammates so I'd think it has to impact it pretty strongly so you have to look at that sure, but all the individual player numbers as well.

I'd bet defensive advanced metrics put a guy like Middleton pretty highly too(he has a better defensive rating than both) I obviously don't think he's better than Butler or Tatum either... Most individual numbers don't support that.

Also the guys I mentioned tend to guard the tougher matchups more frequently than Tatum which is another thing that probably should be taken into account...

Ah damn, I thought maybe it was a Avery Bradley situation. Hope the dude takes as much time as he needs then these games don’t really matter much for the clippers anyways

I agree.... he should take the whole playoffs off

    gotta post the L's too.

Down 290 past two days. Likely going to hang it up until Saturday. Too much unpredictability with whether or not teams will play their players at critical parts of the game. Might slam the Blazers tomorrow but likely just retiring from seeding games gambling.

    Final Seeding Games Winnings:
    $5.3k

but those individual stats are noisy too, because contested shot data doesn't even necessarily require a contest. if you're the closest guy to the shot, they count that as a contest. hell, most 3pa in the league are classified as open or wide open for a reason. and nothing can be examined without context. like deflections for example. the celtics in general don't play an aggressive type of defense (we almost never gamble on anything) yet tatum still ranks highly mostly because he's an elite defender in the passing lanes. and we send tatum at every position but center. nylon calculus tracks matchup data and tatum, last i checked, is the only player who has spent at least 19% of his time on defense guarding 1-4. we also switch everything, and brad never really plays matchup ball until its necessary.

and rpm as a whole seeks to isolate individual performance from your teammates as much as possible. and i don't think contested 3s is a good metric of what classifies as a wing defender. brook lopez contests a s*** ton of 3s as well. youd have to have some sort of arbitrary cutoff point.

also im not sure where this jimmy data is coming from. he has 629 fga against him, opponents shoot 42.3% if im reading this right. tatum has 631 dfga, opponents shoot 43.1%. thats such a minute difference to the point its insignificant. not to mention perhaps we need to give tatum credit for the dissuading shot attempts? i mean, a few years ago kawhis contest numbers weren't all that impressive, but that was because guys wouldn't shoot against him.
