Ok... I'm sure you agree PG is better on D so I won't go much on that, but I said also PJ and Covington... There's more than that who I think are better, but I'll mention them.

PJ defends 14.7 FGA per game.
PJ has 9.3 contested shots per game
    PJ 2.1 deflections per game.
PJ has 1.1 spg and 0.5 bpg.
PJ ranks 6th in charges drawn .34 per game and consistently ranks among the best in the league for years.
Tucker leads all guards and forwards in contested 3PT shots.
Against Tucker opponents shoot at league average from the 3 and they shoot much worse when he's defending them in the post as you know he's one of the best post defenders in the league.

Roco defends 12.4 FGA per game.
Roco has 7.3 contested shots per game.
    Covington 3.4 deflections per game.
Roco for the season is 1.7 spg and 1.3 bpg
for the Rockets he's averaging 1.7 spg and 2.2 bpg.
Opponents shoot 32% from 3 against and 34% from midrange... All this is pretty elite.

Tatum defends 9.6 FGA per game.
Tatum has 6.8 contested shots per game.
Tatum basically doesn't draw charges and ranks near the bottom of the league.
Tatum 2.9 deflections per game is very good.
    1.4 spg and 0.9 bpg
Opponents shoot around league average from the 3 against Tatum... slightly better by about a percent or less than Tucker from 3 and midrange... Tucker a significantly better post defender.

Basically the areas where they're better than Tatum are more significant than where he's better than them.... and the degree to which they're better is greater.

I strongly disagree with saying Tatum is a top 5 wing defender... They're both better... Jimmy, Kawhi, Simmons, etc... are all much better.

So I'll break down the synergy numbers again since you already showcased tatums numbers in these other categories. Overall on defense, Tatum allows .848 ppp, and is in the 85th percentile overall. This actually beats out Jimmy, who is in the 78th percentile, and it is astronomically better than Paul George this year, who is in the 36th percentile (terrible). Also beats out Ben Simmons in PPP allowed. I'm not going to compare him to a guy like Tucker with these numbers because they occupy vastly different roles, but compared to other wing defenders considered elite, tatum beats them in looking at the overall picture. He's in the 92nd percentile guarding pick and roll ball handlers. He's 6th among all wing defenders in Defensive real plus minus (not a perfect stat, ranks duncan robinson and joe ingles really highly, but when you constantly rank well in advanced metrics it means something).

i think he's clearly elite in the passing lanes and on the ball. plus just watching games, he's very rarely out of position on help and its been this way since last season. now he's stronger and more consistent so he guards players like kawhi much better. so if we're just looking at this season, i think its not a stretch at all to say he's been one of the handful of the best wing defenders.

Is it point per possessions when guarding the person shooting the ball, or total shots while on the floor?

I mean his logic is that because you've taken some lumps, you should hold onto whatever little good you got, even if it doesnt get you where you really want to be at

maybe they should keep ben and joel forever, but if future logic dictates they shouldnt, prior s***ty decisions shouldnt be their rationale for avoiding that logic
