if moe wagner had headbutted giannis he'd have been kicked out of the league
If ifs and buts were candies and nuts we'd all have a merry Christmas
but those individual stats are noisy too, because contested shot data doesn't even necessarily require a contest. if you're the closest guy to the shot, they count that as a contest. hell, most 3pa in the league are classified as open or wide open for a reason. and nothing can be examined without context. like deflections for example. the celtics in general don't play an aggressive type of defense (we almost never gamble on anything) yet tatum still ranks highly mostly because he's an elite defender in the passing lanes. and we send tatum at every position but center. nylon calculus tracks matchup data and tatum, last i checked, is the only player who has spent at least 19% of his time on defense guarding 1-4. we also switch everything, and brad never really plays matchup ball until its necessary.
and rpm as a whole seeks to isolate individual performance from your teammates as much as possible. and i don't think contested 3s is a good metric of what classifies as a wing defender. brook lopez contests a s*** ton of 3s as well. youd have to have some sort of arbitrary cutoff point.
also im not sure where this jimmy data is coming from. he has 629 fga against him, opponents shoot 42.3% if im reading this right. tatum has 631 dfga, opponents shoot 43.1%. thats such a minute difference to the point its insignificant. not to mention perhaps we need to give tatum credit for the dissuading shot attempts? i mean, a few years ago kawhis contest numbers weren't all that impressive, but that was because guys wouldn't shoot against him.
I'd think they'd be less noisy than advanced stats that are more directly impacted by your teammates or help defenders.... Also there's stark contrasts between those individual numbers and other players on each individuals teams.
It seems he was gambling on many of those steals in the passing lanes or as a help defender on Smart or another player... He's definitely a very good help defender... It seems Smart or Jaylen usually guard the tougher matchups on ball unless there's a switch off them and Tatum's great help defense in combination with their on ball defense is what gives y'all a great D rating... And y'all also have multiple guys on your team that take a lot of charges which helps the team defense as Tatum doesn't really do that... 19% of his time guarding 1-4? I mean that's not surprising... we both know he's generally not guarding the tougher matchups... even in those clips you linked that's the case and the majority of games... I mean there's a difference between Brook contesting threes... still many guards and forwards who contest more... and PJ who leads all wings in contested threes and also is usually on Kawhi, Lebron, KD, etc... And also Tatum... He's often guarding those star wing guys mostly in games.... Brook ain't.
Oh those defensive contest %'s for Butler were from the 3 and midrange... not just raw DFG% that you mentioned which is negligible... You already know I don't really use FG% for anything as it doesn't really say anything specifically of substance... I only use % based on areas of the floor... In the paint, midrange, 3, etc.
@Synopsis Opponents shoot 27% from 3 against Kawhi... 29% against him at midrange.
are all the playoff matchups set?
Nope 8 seed in the west still up for grabs, the eat all set

those aren't really gambles tho. he's long enough to where he can help in the middle of the floor, play for a steal in the passing lanes, and still be in great position to rotate back to his man and contest. Smart without a doubt usually guards the toughest matchup, but second time we faced the clippers it was tatum who defended kawhi down the stretch with smart on Lou. When we play the raptors for instance tho, we'll put tatum on lowry to p much eliminate their pick and roll while jaylen guards siakofshit. but yes rn his best attribute is his help defense, but also just the fact that he can use his length and speed (he's honestly one of the faster wings in the league) to recover and contest on guys and bother shots from behind.
i think the main thing here is what we're considering wing defenders, at least as far as a ranking them goes. like, ive said to you, i don't consider PJ tucker one because of how much farther his responsibilities go. like to me, smart and pj are the most similar defenders in the league in terms of actual role, while guys like tatum and pg are what i consider wing defenders really.
the charges argument is kind of interesting to me because its such an easy thing to notice as making an impact but i still think a lot is to be said about just having really good help defense and dissuading guys from shooting and containing pick and rolls. as im sure you know having an undersized team, our defense is p much predicated on not letting guys get to the rim. other than smart tatum is def our best defensive player as well. most people would say jaylen and what he does is valuable (elite lateral quickness, only guys who really give him trouble are guys like harden who are stronger than him), but tatums help defense is a lot better, plus jayson has a longer wingspan (both listed at 7ft but tatums def seems longer) so he can contest better.

talking about a few seasons ago, might have been a dpoy year or one of the last spurs seasons
Yo did you ever buy that diffuser lol

the only people i've seen type with ellipses on the internet are meta and indians
Iβm kinda new to this thread but why we roasting the nba in the title so hard. Not disagreeing but what prompted it?

theyve manufactured a superstar (giannis) and expect us to just passively accept it

The NBA supports China. Bootlickers deserve what they get

I think they're great reads that he snatches up, but most of them if he were to not get the ball... his opponent would be wide open to shoot or drive with his back to them... maybe he recovers maybe not... It's not the same as say Smart stripping an opponent on ball or PJ stripping someone in the post... Imo passing lane steals are usually still a gamble if you're going for the ball unless its on a deflection where you're actively guarding your guy, but we can disagree.
Yeah I remember that game... He did a good job late, but yeah its still mostly Smart or Jaylen more possessions than not.... He's definitely the best help defender on the team with Smart being the best overall defender and a close second on help D with all the charges he draws.... His help D is a boon to the teams defense because y'all have good on ball guys...
I'm reminded of Butler in 17-18 having an elite individual defensive year, but Twolves were still cheeks in the rankings because he didn't have quality defenders around him and that affected his advanced stats although the team was league average ish on D I believe with him and bottom of the barrel without him... If Tatum was on such a team it'd be the same case... his advanced numbers would be worse and his individual numbers would be worse or at best what they are now.... That's why I give those a bit more weight than the advanced ones although they do matter also.
Would you consider Covington a wing defender then? He also guards bigs too, but like PJ guards lot of wings himself... He was on the all defensive team in 17-18... And is having a pretty elite individual defensive year by the numbers I've been able to see... How about a dude like Jerami Grant?
talking about a few seasons ago, might have been a dpoy year or one of the last spurs seasons
It was 2016-17... He didn't win DPOY that season it went to Gobert... Although he was still good in multiple areas, but opponents shot 38.4 % from 3 against him.... That was the first year he became the true #1 go to option on the team and honestly his defense wasn't as great that year overall.

just got my invite to this lol it looks so f***ing lame
why do the packs look like condom wrappers
...i sure did
