If we valued music, we'd purchase it. If we purchased it, artists could make a livelihood by being artists. And we'd likely value music as art even more.
So, is it our fault?

When I say music sucks now, I'm speaking generally. Of course there's good music out there. We just spent the last two months feasting during the beef.
My main point is, what effect does streaming have on music quality, if any? If we mainly interact with music via streaming, what does that do to the artistry?

Yep, thats what I was basically alluding too, at the same time, physicals are way more of a novelty now, then being a representation of a finished product. An album is suppose to be an artist big statement to the world, that idea is completely lost now.

Jun 23, 2024I think there’s multiple things going on here.
On the one hand I agree that regular artists deserve to be able to survive on gig work, and fractions of a penny per stream is simply not viable and is killing that side of the art form.
On the other hand, great talent still rises to the top due to the sheer fact that their artistry is able to overcome the pitfalls of modern technology. And the fans can tell the difference between real talent and label plants.
What really makes me feel kinda sick is what if future legends in the making just don’t pursue music because their perception of it is that it isn’t lucrative anymore.
Ultimately I think the AMOUNT of artists is also the problem. Some amount of gatekeeping is required to ensure we get quality. The nosedive in quality has to do in part with the plethora of new artists that don’t deserve to be here. Just because you love music doesn’t make you an artist worth investing in.
