In the iTunes/digital sales era, people consumed more singles which is why albums from that period had so many successful singles and eras went on for like 2 years (such as Katy Perry’s Teenage Dream and Adele’s 21)

Not just that, which does play a roll, but when we look back 10-15 years ago we only look at the highlights and compare it with what comes out over the course of a year here in the present. There was a LOT of poor music to come out in the that era too, like every era, it just got forgotten. So it’s a mixture of things

Corporations have made it hard to own it

Laptops don’t have CD drives

Cars don’t either

iPod classics aren’t made anymore

Ect.

you can listen to everything now but there’s an overload that comes with it. steve lacy’s tour a few years back showed how hard it is to build a genuine fanbase that will listen to your whole project from a song that blew up on tiktok

most music sucks now, but that doesn't mean I cannot buy old albums, which I still do
