just my opinion. It was an impressive movie. Def deserves credit for that. Felt like I was watching too much of a homage like House of the Devil whereas Pearl goes beyond the homage into truly psychologically damaging territory.

I prefer the psychological approach that Pearl went for rather than the grimy slasher feel of X

But I’ve always preferred psychological horror over slasher films

Pearl is way too self important feeling for me compared to X. I appreciated seeing a grimy genre film played straight. It’s been 30 years of ironic subversions and remakes. Getting to see something that nailed the base level assignment of “blood and b****” while still being made with craft and having a bit more to say—felt like a miracle when I first saw it. Pearl was closer to the sensibility of most A24 horror while X was a refreshingly indulgent exploitation movie. All of West’s work is arguably pastiche, but X really understood the material it was pulling from. I also just found Mia Goth to be doing “too much” in Pearl.

Yea Hereditary is my top 1 A24 film. Probably the only horror movie that genuinely unnerves me and gets under my skin every time I watch it

It’s one my favorite horror films ever but I’ve only seen it like 2-3 times because of how much it f***s with me lmaooo

I haven’t. I definitely wanted to watch it, but then I saw that there were trypophobia warnings for that movie 😬
