“Dance” music was never respected by critics, but I think it was made without critics in mind. That’s why Aphex was called “Intelligent” Dance Music.
critics didnt respect funk?
enough with the infighting yall, banter is cool but now we disrespecting others lists?? Only disrespect we show is subliminal S M H
i agree that the brand of poptimism thats like "actually phil collins was good" is dumb. but for like 50 years the vast majority of music criticism was done by, for and about white men and certain artists were canonized accordingly. an overcorrection is due and using "ree poptimism" to criticize women who make dope music is dumb.
Every decade had critically lauded women. Are you saying they were tokens?

Albums with creative direction were appreciated (George), but most weren’t anything to fawn over

First Drake, now you?
What’s in the water up there?
Some snubs imo on top of my head:
no love for Lemonade
The National got 2 albums in but nothing from The War On D**** or Beck.
Was Abel snubbed too?
Jon Hopkins’ Immunity snubbed
Disclosure’s Settle snubbed
Slowdive’s Self Titled
Perfume Genius
Moses
I didn’t see Melodrama either
No James Blake
The xx (although Jamie solo made it, but that was low as f***)
Arctic Monkeys
St Vincent
Maxwell
Kelela
Angel Olsen
Burn Your Fire for No Witness is one I forgot to include when making my list

Emotion didn't even get rave reviews. It was mostly 7/10s across the board
And up until its release, she was merely a one-hit wonder whose mainstream career was assumed to be all but dead.
It's debatable if it was even the best pop album of the decade but it's undeniable that it was the most influential pop album of the decade when it came to the genre's consumption.
It's not that deep
I actually think the record labels mishandling of the album gave it an “outsider” status that almost immediately gifted the album with a cult following. I remember when that album came out, people were talking more about Interscope than the songs.

this is factual, critics have been forced to treat it this way in recent years because of its great internet popularity
