You’re entitled to your opinion and I would expect that opinion from you lol

Also I don’t necessarily disagree with your take on Concept album doesn’t = good album

I think with MMTBS it’s about the craftsmanship than anything else. As someone who’s done music for over 10 years and has gotten far enough to be able to personally do some work for 1 of the big 3 my perspective is different.

Not only am I listening to Kendrick’s great writing and rapping I’m listening to the flawless execution of the recording and all of the performances, the execution and innovation of the production, the stellar mix by manny maraquin (I actually own and work on the headphones he designed to mix the album). S*** is really fantastic work all around. That said I’ll be the first to admit that I don’t listen to it that often. It’s a heavy listen, a work of art that is meant to be admired more than listened to over and over.

I can def see someone not caring about any of that and just coming to the conclusion that it’s “not good” just because it doesn’t compel them to listen to it on repeat but that perspective is only one way to look at it.

The reason why you can't make this argument in good faith is because MMATBS isn't Kendrick's first album that tackles heavy/sensitive topics/themes. All his albums have an overarching message and up until MMATBS, he's managed to execute them well enough to be able to hit that sweet spot of still making the songs listenable/palatable to the point where it doesn't dilute his message.

He tried the same approach with MMATBS but missed the mark. There's a handful of songs on the album that are meant to function as easy listens/songs that could appeal to more casual listeners but he simply doesn't stick the landing on them either.

And while I admire that he tackled the subject he took on in the album, what good is a message if it isn't presented in a way that can have the most impact on people? Especially when he's executed the same task with success several times before? I still bump everything from Section.80 — DAMN. today without any issues so you can't say the message on MMATBS is SO HEAVY that I just don't get it or I just can't appreciate it. It didn't resonate with me because he didn't execute his vision as well as he has on previous albums and that's okay.

This and French Extreme cinema, are the films I still don't have the stomach to watch

  • See, in Taylor made Freestyle Drake alludes to quintuple entendre by saying Kendrick needs a qunitriple entendre. "Pants might rip" is a reference to spongebob squarepants, who famously has an episode where he rips his pants. Kendrick has a track called "Cartoon and Cereal," which samples various cartoons. So pants might rip is actually a diss at Kendrick for watching cartoons like a literal child. This bar is so crazy that it's going over so many people's heads

He’s so weird, because I love his stuff for the emotion it brings out in me and the messages I interpret from it, but I never wanna revisit, because I feel like I got it, and im afraid it’ll be tedious the second time through
I might revisit it in years though, just to see if I still like it when im a completely different person

I usually forget so much about a movie after about 4 years that a revisit is almost like a first watch (barring the most iconic stuff)

the early 60s run all has that similar social malaise vibe so I want to revisit to distinguish which was with cause they all blended together sorta (minus Red Desert when we get slapped with color)

And yes I’m a film nerd and that’s why it’s always cool for me to hear about some films that wouldn’t be on most peoples list bc that most likely means that person has a special connection to it

There was nothing wrong with his list

thats a good ass list if youre still in that period before you discover foreign films and dust can hit just the same

And that there, is the shift. You made an inference based on what was "obviously implied" to you, but not said or mentioned at all.

Why not just ask him what he meant by that?

Ngl not tryna act like s*** ain’t subjective but this list reads like you just googled some random popular movies and said yup this is it

Where are the more left field or obscure picks that really define YOUR taste?

Nah they're in here. I love epics. These films also defines what has raised me. My father showed me godfather when I was 6 and practically shoved my head in the tv when Vito corleone said "Sonny what's the matter with you? Never tell anyone outside the family what you're thinking!"

Lawrence of Arabia is also and absolute classic and I bet you can't find 10 ppl who've seen the movie know it's a true story have read some of te Lawrence his epics or THAT HE IS LITERALLY THE INSPIRATION FOR DUNE

See i think the problem is sometimes individuals like yourself seem to forget that certain films are canonical "classics" if you will because they not only stand the test of time but provide inspiring minds tonal persuasions in attempting to create classics of their own makings and ideations of their own conceptual manifestations. If my list looks like it's somehow popularized that's because many individuals find excellence to be popular.
