Travis Scott can drop a surprise album tomorrow and it’s doing more than 150K, the mental gymnastics need to stop
Not without bundles
Utopia did the streaming equivalent of The Off Season first week, and that was a 12 song album.

I hope so if its an album. Jcole dropped a mixtape.
Great numbers for a mixtape. For reference, drake's dark lane mixtape did 223K and kendricks untitled unmastered (essentially a mixtape) did 178K. The albums they followed those with, clb and damn, both did 600K+. Mixtapes always do less than albums, a cole album would do 250K+.
Anyone defending these J. Cole numbers is pathetic, this is supposed to be the #3 guy. 150K is terrible.
If Kendrick dropped an album tomorrow and it sold 150K, he would get clowned on here.
Cole didnt drop an album. HDD confirmed its a mixtape.

J. Cole's surprise mixtape Might Delete Later gets the edge for #1 on Friday's HITS Top 50, leading a maxi pack of new releases.
Did you clown Kendrick when he did 178K with untitled unmastered, or did you see it for what it was - a compilation (esentially a mixtape)?
Does the title of a mixtape really affect how it's perceived in 2024 with streaming?
Yes. 100%.
Drake dropped dark lane mixtape and did 223K.
Dropped CLB about a year later and did 613K.
What the project is, will always matter
Then its not a mixtape fam
yes it is. Mixtapes are commercial now. and these great numbers for a mixtape
Drake's Honestly, Never Mind did 200k as a surprise release
Is that also a flop??
Thats a flop because its an album.
This isn't because its a mixtape. Truly is that simple lol.
(Drake redeemed himself with FATD and HL numbers proving he clears Kendrick and Cole though)

read what I posted above
side projects of major artist typically don't do as well first week, especially in a surprise release.
Honestly, Never Mind was a dance album. Most Drake fans weren't in a rush to stream it after finding out.
It still went platinum later on anyways. How can that be a flop?

Its a solo studio album. F*** that side project bullshit. Theres a numbers expectation for a drake studio album, which it did not do, which clb and fatd did.
204K fw on an album / going platinum would be a W for most other rappers, but not Drake because the bar so high for him, being a W/L is relative.
Mixtapes and Collab albums generally do less than artists solo albums (which is why Her Loss numbers so impressive), but theres no excuse for a solo album.

Yea there are expectation for a Drake solo studio album but those expectations are different if Drake goes into a different genre on a surprise release lol
If you want another example of what I mean, go look at Lil Wayne's Rebirth. It sold 176k first week. Why? Because it was marketed as a rock album and most Wayne fans are hip hop fans and not interested in that. Tha Carter III did 1million first week. He later went to do 964k with Tha Carter IV.
Most Drake fans are not interested in a dance album. They are hip hop/ R&B fans. So they're not eager to listen first week.
You could say f*** side projects all you want but this is always been the case.
You can't expect a Drake dance album to do 400k+ on a surprise release. It don't work that way.
You can't call a platinum album a flop when it comes to Drake, because all Drake albums have went platinum. So in the end, it still met expectations.
yall so addicted to giving Ws and Ls, yall don't consider context and miss the bigger picture sometimes.

Lmao no.
Were u there when rebirth released?
Rebirth was scheduled for a Dec 2009 release. It was rescheduled last min to feb 2010, but some copies were already shipped out so It leaked dec 2009. Leaked for 2 months prior to release when bootlegging was still prevelant is why it sold so much less than c3, not because it was rock
Not sure what genre you consider "Igor" but Tyler has openly stated he doesn't consider it rap. Yet Igor and CMIYGL did about the same numbers first week.
Drake fans are DRAKE fans. We fans of the artist and if the artist drops fire we gon bump it - like HL and FATD.
And going Platinum isnt the expectation - sellin 400K+ fw is. Its drake ofc it gon go platinum.
And while HNVM was a flop for drake its probably better than most artists best albums. Its just how good drake is.
yall so addicted to giving Ws and Ls, yall don't consider context and miss the bigger picture sometimes.
The context that matters is what the project is - a studio album, a mixtape or a collab album - and the artist the numbers they relative to
If a project is leaked super early in past or mid week release, or not commercially released initially, those are factors
But the music being "different" isnt. Music is music we here for music lmao.
The way he's marketing it, I think it might be in the 400k-500k range tbh
you setting him up and yourself up to be quoted 😭😭
This is a dumb post because it's not 7 niggas in rap right now touching those numbers with an album.
If lil baby hype still here i can name 7

sir, this is a mixtape
Cole numbers will fall to 139k by next monday
a true L
They gonna fall lower than that no one is listening to that s*** anymore
If Kendrick dropped anything and it sold 150 y’all would be calling it a flop no matter if it was an album, mixtape, cassette tape, soundtrack, whatever.
So this is a flop too.
sir, this is a mixtape
Kendrick would get clowned by y’all for releasing anything that didn’t clear 200K first week
Cole didnt drop an album. HDD confirmed its a mixtape.

All these words for a flop mixtape
Isn't this a mixtape? If so, this is alright numbers.
But, if this is a hint at how much The Fall Off will sell fw, then that'll make the title of the album incredibly ironic.
Like others said, Kendrick got dragged to hell and back for just being a few units short of 300k fw for MMTBS. Hell, MMTBS's projections are part of what make this megathread blow up.
Ya'll gonna have to give Cole the same energy especially if you're cosigning him saying that Kendrick's music ain't hitting.
They act like 50% of listeners saw a new J. Cole project on Apple Music, saw that it was just a mixtape on Google, and decided not to listen for that reason
There is absolutely nothing different between this project and The Off-Season, there was even confusion around whether that was a mixtape or not when it dropped.
The mixtape excuse for poor sales is pure cope in 2024

Honestly, Nevermind was announced the night of release. If it was announced as a “mixtape rather than an album, then 204K sales would be okay to you?
It would’ve sold exactly the same regardless of the word Drake used in the IG post to announce it.
These type of semantics to differentiate projects simply don’t exist in the streaming era.

I'm trying to be fair to Cole here lol.
But what you're saying reminds me of when 50 was promoting Animal Ambition as an album but called it a mixtape when it flopped.
