My man.....I remember when C3 came out right in the middle of the Great Recession.

Nobody had money like that and gas prices were as crazy as they were today but Wayne still sold a milli fw in hard copies and people got really invested in the album due to spending their hard earned money on the purchase even while struggling.

I know you're gonna simp for streaming cause of Drake but it's still apples and oranges. Spending money on an album back then even if it was based on the singles showed more dedication to the artist than streaming, of which a good number involves curiosity streams.

I'm not even arguing that the pre-streaming era was better. But it took more dedication for someone to head out to the stores and spend their hard earned money on an album.

Because of the lack of dedication it takes to stream, it's harder than ever before for artists who blew up in the 2020's to maintain successful careers in the music industry and even Billboard themselves noted this.

The arguments in the Drake / MJ thread were all just variants of this lol it was nuts

I agree this site always tries to downplay Abel but I will say it's sad and says a lot that all the people that listened to Blinding Lights didn't really show up for his next album. I don't think Abel is the massive global popstar we thought he'd become if he struggles to outsell f***ing Gunna of all people...

Bundles are back so hopefully he can drop a huge hit and get back to being at least Drake adjacent or somewhat close

He’s been on a sold out global stadium tour for the past year, he’s definitely surpassed any expectations anybody had of him

Ok and Drake just had the hugest Rap tour in history and had people spending $300 on tickets during a recession. While Travis Scott, Rod Wave, Lil Baby, and company are selling $10 tickets to fill half empty venues. What are we even arguing about.

Who cares about who bought a CD It's clear as f*** Drake would still be the top draw in Rap today even without streaming & he has the most fans willing to spend money for his music.

@thegreatdivine what happened to occupying the entire Top 10?

7 out of the top 10 songs is a big W

Including two #1 songs, and the potential for IDGAF to go #1 next week if it holds

But a month ago @thegreatdivine and other posters ITT were acting like it was guaranteed he would occupy the entire Top 10, and called me crazy when I said it wouldn’t happen and he would get 8-9 spots at most

I'm not taking away from Drake.

I wasn't even specifically focusing on him tbh.

I'm just saying in general that the streaming era requires less dedication from fans than the pre streaming era.

Hell, even bringing Drake up proves my point because he was an established artist before streaming really took over.

Lil Baby objectively has the best selling rap album of this decade and it'll be the 1st album to go Diamond in the 2020's for sure. But obviously My Turn going Diamond won't feel as big as an album like Take Care or C3 or GKMC or GRODT or Graduation hitting that streak since we've seen a big difference between the impact of those albums in the pre-streaming era verses many of the current albums streaming/Tik Tok era we're in today.

    What exactly is less dedication?

Because you buy a CD that counts as 1 sale. You can hate the album or only listen 5 times, it counts as 1 sale.

With streaming you have to play an album 1,000+ times before it even counts as 1 sale.

Therefore in order for an album to go DIAMOND in streaming, millions of fans have to play it thousands of times.

Going Diamond with an album in streaming objectively requires way bigger reach with more of the public than in the past, and they have to keep revisiting the album for YEARS.

    To each their own then.

I just know that even actual music executives have highlighted exactly what I've said so it's not really just an "oldhead shouting at the clouds" type of take, especially since I'm still a 20s something.

But y'all are acting like soon as you click play on Spotify for the first time it automatically counts as a whole sale lmao.

For an album to really run up huge numbers on streaming overtime it has to be revisited hundreds of times by the fans.

1 million people playing a 20 track album once still only counts as barely 10K sales.

Streaming is something that is meant to be tracked continuously over months/years/decades for it to really add up. So when you have someone like Drake who can do 400K, 500K, and 600K just off streaming in 1 week is really does show how INSANE his reach actually is because it really takes forever for even 1 person streaming an album to count as 1 sale.

Drake doing 400K in streaming is reaching wayyyyyyyyyyyyyy more people in a week than 400K people buying an album. Even 1 million. The reach he's built really is legendary and clearly it's going to be awhile before it is seen with another rapper as you have shown pointing out labels saying they can't get people interested in new music/artists.

It should've been easy for him. The charts are in the gutter rn and when Taylor got 1-10, the 10th song had 250 points.

First day predictions had FPS at 450 points. Not sure why he thought people would be engaged with Yachty inspired music for more than 3 days but oh well

Is O-Rod’s second era kind of a dud or are these numbers in line with her last one?

She sold 10k more this project first week and scored a #1 with Vampire, but the singles don't seem to have much lasting power compared to the ones from Sour.

Should get a boost tho when her tour starts

    Literally the opposite.

One of my fave rappers helped Drake blow up and I don't care about sales at all.

I just love f***ing with Drake stans sometimes cause ya'll fragile af sometimes.

Obviously I don't gaf about Morgan Wallen's sales.

Wayne flopped just now. Idc. He's still my GOAT.

Nas's Hitboy albums never went number 1 on Billboard. Idc. He's still my GOAT as well.

Ghostface is one of my fave rappers. Very few of his albums went Platinum.

I couldn't imagine being a "success stan" or a chart stan for any rapper cause it'll eventually lead to disappointment when the numbers start to decline.

Maybe not. Bad Bunny hasn’t done super well on the Hot 100 this year, Drake should have a real chance at a second #1 if the album holds well

Going Diamond with an album in streaming objectively requires way bigger reach with more of the public than in the past, and they have to keep revisiting the album for YEARS.

Any great, classic level album pre-streaming was being revisited for years, but repeat listens didn’t translate to more sales.

That’s why streaming is a little bit flukey, because it creates a never ending amount of “sales” when really it’s just people listening to the music they love.

If an album like Graduation got additional sales every time someone played the CD in their cars or played it from their iTunes from 2007-2016, pre-streaming, the album would undoubtedly be Diamond by now. But since that wasn’t the case before streaming, the album is still not Diamond

Exactly. Pre-streaming albums didn’t have the advantage of never ending sales like streaming albums do.

There are countless albums that would be Diamond right now if repeat plays garnered additional sales pre-streaming
