I'm not adding conditions, you keep asking questions and I keep answering

In the first post you said there is no reason we can’t get rid of all prisons. How am I meant to take that? The way it is put across suggests that it can be done right away. Basically your point is if we completely solve all the problems that lead to crimes, we can eventually look at phasing out prisons for rehabilitation centers.

And what are these underlying assumptions

That these systemic reasons you cite as the causes of crime could be eliminated some day, when a lot of them have evolved based on some of the basic founding principles of your country.

That systemic reasons are actually behind the majority of crime. They're behind the majority of incarcerations perhaps, statistically in your country, but not crime itself. Violent crimes predate our nations and our societies, foolish to think that they could be eliminated, or that people would be ok with these rehab facilities for perps.

You could have saved a lot of time by just saying as a society we need to work on ebbing out the factors that lead to crime but that wouldn’t garner much of a response so you had to frame it in a controversial way as an attention grab.

No, because we still need to find an intermediary solution for what to do in the meantime

    1. Not really sure what you mean but yeah we'd want to rearrange those values that led to the prominence of crime as well

    2. Systemic issues do cause crime tho just as systemic issues lead to mass incarceration. And that's not really an argument either. Societies are constantly evolving. I wouldn't expect nations of the past to have eliminated crime any more than I would expect them to have found life on mars

Poverty isn't the only thing that leads to violent criminals... Solve crime? We will always need some place to keep truly dangerous people separated from society...

Religion, racism, extremism, mental disorders, violent urges, abusive upbringing, etc.... So many things contribute to violent crime... They're not just going to disappear... We can't solve crime... We can reduce it.

a majority of crime is just about money. It's not a coincidence richer countries have lesser crime. Of course, "crimes of passion" behave differently, but those are about 20 to 30% of crimes, while the rest pertain to money. Besides murder, insult/libel, arson, sexual crimes, assault and a few others, a lot of crimes would gradually disappear if the economic situation improved drastically. The other big factor is alcoholization. Reduce economic inequality and d*** abuse rates and you will have faaaar less criminals.
