how's cole trying to reconnect with his origin and rapping about it him misleading the fans. you're twisting yourself into a pretzel
Kendrick rapped about his origin all over Mr. Morale, even had his cousin on there rapping an interlude. but he said don’t let my trauma be your saving grace
Cole literally did the same s*** on Disc 29 and that was gonna be the album we was gonna get if not for the beef bruh lol, Cole’s words
I think the thing about Mr. Morale, even though it has it's lulls here in there in the track list, I think when it hits it's highs it's some of his best work. GNX is just not giving me much to keep wanting to come back to often as good as it is.
Gnx ain't anything deep. It was made clearly with the intent of LA vibes and homage to g funk/west coast sounds. It's good for what it was at the moment. You would expect Fall Off to be better after 10 years of cole working on it on/off
the issue is with all that musicality, his music post damn doesn't have a lot of replayable value so i doubt its worth much. once he went the "i'm a hypocrite so don't expect much from me" route with his music, there's not much to enjoy compared to a drake. cole still has the message and relatability factor so there's always something there
On the contrary, I think Kendrick leaning into the musicianship aspect of his artistry on GNX is what made that record stick and go on to LIVE with the GP for as long as it did. The melodic structures, the tension/release phrasing in certain songs, incredible syncopation abilities at times (Reincarnated). He has a deep understanding of pitch to not be a traditional is nuts. That melody he wrote for Luther alone.. the guy has an EAR .. outside of just rhyming words together.. his choices make his art so much more expressive and colorful. I even like the way he experiments with his timbre..
Imo, Kendrick raps like an instrumentalist on top of being a deeply empathetic writer.. it's no surprise why he's adored the way he is in artists circles.

That's what an AOTY looks like

You mean that in a "musician's musician" kinda way or..

yea you can put it that way.. certain artists scratch that 'itch' that stir us up in a certain way. Crazy cause I was watching Ilia Milian the Olympic figure skater and I besides the crazy technical feats he was pulling off (won Gold for Team USA). as a performer I noticed how beautiful the musicality/storytelling was shown through his 'movements' alone.. it's hard to put into words, though.

not gonna lie man, gnx sounds generic af to me. there's nothing unique about it which is why kendrick fans started saying "this not the real album" when it came out. the west coast sound is already dated and he mixed it with jack antonoff pop song writing. thats the perfect recipe for untimeless music. it had a lot of hype in the moment but its becoming more forgettable as time goes by
The pre chorus on the let out so hard but that actual hook ass
It's so bad ðŸ˜ðŸ’”

Yeah when athletes get into that flow state, you can't look away

I loved it honestly.. one of the most enjoyable first listens I've had that year. Art is subjective, so it's cool you didn't connect to it. Just giving another perspective of why it did with others. The aspects of art that I'm talking about impacts the listener subconsciously and compels them in a way that connects. Regardless of our personal opinions about his music there's a reason for that.

that same 'feeling'/sensation exists throughout ALL artistic mediums btw.. other examples.. Beyonce live, James Blake, Jackie Hill Perry, Cory Henry.. even those dancers from Alvin Ailey etc

i mean, that's just drake but worse imo. i don't think kendrick will ever be the guy i go for best production, hooks, and song writing rap wise

Sounds counterintuitive but it takes a willingness to "fail" to get to that level
G Unit era and Eminem Stans for the longest
Nah they didn’t criticize other artists like this

He was on his late 90s frontman vibe
