It’s not an issue that the concept has been done - how many rap songs have been made using a girl as a metaphor for something else (I Used to Love H.E.R., Homecoming, Gloria, etc.) and it’s still good.

What I found boring here was that Cole didn’t do anything novel with the concept - it was too literal. When the track started, I thought there’d be some commentary on the changes in his life from fame to coming up to his childhood or whatever, but instead it was literal stuff like ā€œbaby go back in stomachā€ and ā€œI’m growing shorterā€. That is exactly what Nas did on Rewind so it’s not as interesting here.

It’s also just boring narratively. It’s not interesting to hear about someone who is born, gets married, has kids and dies. The story on Rewind is like a scene from a mafia movie in reverse and has the twist of the shooting at the start of the track being set up at the end.

Also, Rewind was just a quick throwaway track and more of a fun story than anything. Cole releasing it with a music video to build hype for his album he’s been promoting for half a decade is anticlimactic.

I know this is overthinking the whole thing but it just really feels like a boring take on the concept and I don’t understand why he chose this as the first track to release. If it was a random song on the album, whatever. But this should be his best foot forward.

At first I disagreed but after reading through this It’s not an issue that the concept has been done - how many rap songs have been made using a girl as a metaphor for something else (I Used to Love H.E.R., Homecoming, Gloria, etc.) and it’s still good.

never listened to him tbh, his name sounds like a country artist so i usually avoid songs with him

cLOUDs was awful lyrical miracle s*** over an interesting beat.

Hope Cole has more songs like PA on this.

Cole is technically so impressive man, but something about him just doesn’t hit my soul as it should. I think a part of it is his delivery.

Can you explain why Kendrick hits your soul in a way Cole doesn’t? This question isn’t to stir drama. Very genuine cause I think Kendrick more of a jazz guy Cole more soul Krit more blues

This might be a strange answer but for me its because Cole doesn't seem to have any malice/anger in him.

I tend to gravitate more towards rappers that will put a bit more of that emotion on the mic and Cole doesn't seem to be capable of that. Kendrick I can feel it through his delivery even on some of the less agressive tracks he releases.

That being said, I feel like a lot of people do like Cole and find it easier to relate to him specifically because he seems like a chill guy on the mic.

No offense taken. Funny you say Krit I loved him back in the day (still do).

I hope what I’m saying makes sense, but with Cole I feel like he’s talking AT me. With Kendrick I feel like he is talking about his life/topics but not lecturing me. He’s just talking from his perspective. Cole feels more like a lecture.

There are definitely exceptions, like Neighbors which he obviously killed. But as a general matter this is the difference IMO

It’s interesting you say this because I think Cole talking at me gives me a soulful connection.

I think both do lectures and talks at me but I see what you mean.

    IM NOT WRONG

you read the name ā€œKenny Masonā€ with no other context, safe to assume that’s probably a country music star

  • Kendrick just has a much more interesting delivery than Cole. Even on his lyrically dense tracks, he’ll find ways to phrase things or use voice inflections that keep your interest, unlike Cole who seems content to use the same monotone flow and rhyme scheme for an entire track.

Real is a Kendrick track that I find quite boring for this reason - his verses are dull and the song feels like a slog. Neighbours is a Cole where the flow switches up a lot and it makes for a good listen.

While I see ur point about it being literal, I do think he uses his events in his life to paint the picture of the cycle hes referring to with the concept for the Fall Off, the rise and fall of an artist especially as it pertains to his life

And though I'm blessed, I see me stressin' from hearin' the chirps
