One thing I don’t understand is why kids aren’t emulating the biggest artists

Despite what weirdos on here who pretend they’re 15 and “tapped in” say, Kanye, Drake, Cole, Kendrick, Future and Travis are all popular with kids, It’s impossible to do what they do without being so

So why are kids getting into making music not inspired by them? Why do kids immediately run to start making ripoff Carti s***? (I know it’s more than just Carti but you know what I mean)

You don’t see pop sensibilities and congruency with the current soundscape in fakemink?

    I truly don’t

The way he engineers his vocals doesn’t sound like something that’ll ever be super mainstream in my opinion, I could be wrong though

No disrespect to the rage style, but the simple answer is that it’s easier to make than what Drake, Kendrick, Cole, Travis, etc. do

Because they mask their inability to do that as “nobody wanna hear all that lyrical s***

Lol why would anyone actually try to be a Kanye Kendrick Drake level artist when they could make just as much money f*** just as many b****es and have just as much fame doing what Carti does (by their logic)

I’m saying they’re legacy artists. They’re established and their ethos provides a massive amount of their credibility

Kids have no intention of investing in new lyricists

Yeah because of everything I said in the post you quoted being applied to new lyricists after 2015

Chance Vic Smino etc are largely considered corny for not playing into the ethos Carti Uzi etc play into. Being fair Vic and Chance have had their corny moments but take someone like Smino who had a unique sound and capability to make big songs

He may be a little older at this point + simply didn’t make the “right” records but its a self swallowing circle where the fans ethos changed and thus lyricists don’t have an easy path to appeal to the newer <25 year old demographics of rap. Graduation Take Care MMLP GRODT Tha Carters etc still stream high daily

  • notbrock

Then who are they investing in?

Niggas who have no meat and potatoes to their music and thus they say they fell off once the natural cycle of hype moves on from them. See Lil Baby Thug Uzi

debatably LUCKI and Carti at this point lol (their hypebeast hipster fans growing tired of them cosplaying the street niggas they respectively look up to in their beat selection and aesthetics)

    Veeze next

    Spot on

@NiGHTS this is what I was referring to when I said that pop struggled a bit in the 2010s outside of the heavy hitters

Oh the tail end of the 2010s

Then who are they investing in?

They’re not. They let the algorithm choose their background music or tv they don’t care

Because the algorithm trained them to think from the perspective of virality trendiness and clout and not from the perspective of genuine creativity or skill

They may like those artists but many of them don’t have the same ear for skill that our generation has, they hear “vibes” and narratives first and flows last if at all

A lot of youths value how they are perceived aesthetically and socially wayyyyy more than they value the craftsmanship of whatever they are doing. The persona comes first and the rap style is secondary, they just pull whatever style off the shelf that is trendy and fits their aesthetic.

They may like Drake and Kanye but they view their aesthetic as old. Carti yeat and yb have a youthful trendy aesthetic so they emulate that and the sound is just a byproduct of it

The modern internet landscape, social media, modern media, engagement hungry content creators, and the viral success of trendy artists who lack staying power being rewarded financially over and over

I think one of the defining characteristics of rap is that you could say “more” than in other genres. It’s just way more of a wordy style of music. That lets you expand on topics and thoughts more. And it doesn’t have to be serious topic or anything, but whatever the topic is you can add more color to it by using more words. The newer generations moved away from that to emphasizing melody more and to be flat out honest most of them just don’t have s*** to say really. So what is this new style of rap providing that other genres don’t anymore? And those genres usually have better vocalists and melodies. Rap just isn’t as wide appealing as a genre if people aren’t actually really rapping anymore.

    Agree with this
