bigmike0123I think one of the defining characteristics of rap is that you could say “more” than in other genres. It’s just way more of a wordy style of music. That lets you expand on topics and thoughts more. And it doesn’t have to be serious topic or anything, but whatever the topic is you can add more color to it by using more words. The newer generations moved away from that to emphasizing melody more and to be flat out honest most of them just don’t have s*** to say really. So what is this new style of rap providing that other genres don’t anymore? And those genres usually have better vocalists and melodies. Rap just isn’t as wide appealing as a genre if people aren’t actually really rapping anymore.

XavierManeHonestly that "rage" movement was the beginning of the end. The new dudes are just makin bullshit that niggas do not actually wanna hear but labels already invested in them. So there's basically a logjam of WLR-type rappers who no one cares about.

Yea, it’s undeniable. Street rappers still used to have more respect for the game. Meek was a great battle rapper. Record execs like Birdman had Wayne working on writing lyrics every day as a youngin.
Even beyond the Big 3, we had so many others like Wale, Krit, etc. Even weed rappers like Currensy and Wiz take their craft more seriously.
I flip through a playlist of the most popular young rappers and it feels almost comical sadly. So fans are sticking with the Big 3 and co still because there are not really young replacements. And the Big 3 themselves are moving to middle age and not dropping retirement albums like previous generations. They know it too.

Some of this is due to stuff bigger than rap though. Many kids have the smart laptops in class and don't write as much in paper or for essays. Downstream impacts of less investments in education is showing.
Even for those who write digitally like Drake with the infamous Blackberry, he used to be in rap forums. Rappers today get popping from social media and short vids more often, they aren't in rap forums like that.
KTT2 and other forums doesn't produce rappers like that for a reason.
I don't think this really works cause most old rappers like HOV and Biggie came from bad schools and areas they didn't need a school system to get lyricism

Most of them just wanna have aura and get money. Trying to be a pure rapper doesn't appeal to either of those. Ye, Drake, Cole, Kendrick, etc are all exceptions because of their legacies and ability to have cross over appeal
