i’d consider every one of those “legacy” acts (not legacy as in boomer acts but they came out 5+ years ago. not the best term to use but just to make my point rn it works) and not even indie really. not a bad thing just that they came out before the pandemic/tiktok industry complex/worsening of everything overall and have had immense success.
like i said in my post it’s kinda like what’s going on w rap where it’s this “class” ie the upcoming generation that seems to be getting drowned out completely. i know some pretty amazing artists/bands tryna make it work for example and there doesn’t seem to be a clear path forward anymore at all, and even if you do develop a fanbase thanks to streaming forget about making anything that looks like livable income
In what world are Mk.gee, Phoebe Bridges, boygenius, Steve Lacy, and Magdalena Bay legacy acts?
Magdalena Bay’s debut album dropped in 2021
that's the problem lmao
Not really the people that were named just aren't your taste which is fine. But to say they ain't doing s*** is funny cus they are
op is crazy and bisexual
Mitski had a hit
It can still happen
m83 midnight city would flop in this era im afraid
Sharon Van Etten just dropped and saved indie so it's relevant again I fear
Pop music literally stands for Pop(ular) music, what are you talking about?
pop music as a genre and popular music as a concept are different things
pop isnt really a holistic genre as much as its a classification for whats popular that spans relevancy in a time period. like yes pedantically to a degree, sure pop has its own characteristics that make people like it more than other genres (time signatures, production styles, etc) but its a widespanning term that is separated from specific categorized genres.
the popularity of pop is self-evident because its just whatever is popular at the time - 80s pop is not the same as 2020 pop, so trying to say if it is/isn't relevant for the point of comparing it to "indie" which is a highly specific classification doesn't make sense.
pop music is a genre with a history and genre traits and origin point.
pop music can also be used to refer to popular music but that is different than the genre of pop music
the only relevant white people music left is country (casual) and hyperpop (too online)
pop is the 2nd biggest genre rn. and country is third. both dominated by white people for the most part.
subcultures are literally inherently racialized in the US and music is tied to subcultures. this isn't about being "obsessed with race", it's a literal fact. for example Reggaeton in the US is very literally a music genre consumed by latinos, and in cities like NYC, very particularly Puerto Rican & Dominican. pointing that out has nothing to do with "race obsession", it is a literal historical fact of where it started and how it got imported into the US. if i pointed out how black metal in the US is also partially tied to neo-nazism in the midwest no one is going to be like "wow stop bringing race into it".

need to know more about neonazi ties to american black metal

a lot of people think its just because of Burzum but varg is kind of a footnote in terms of the neonazi - metal connection. it has mostly to do with the fact black metal in the US is mostly an export from both central euro & nordic countries and a lot of it was both very violent as well as rooted in paganism, and obviously the latter has an almost 100% overlap with being a neo-nazi. in the US the way it got imported was basically through white supremacist networks that were already consuming the music in nordic countries and then copycats sprung up here over time and it became a thing separate from the original movement

thats crazy lol i knew something isnt right with the whole american bm thing like where your nazis at?? why is it hipsters yelling?
didn’t read thread so i might rehash talking points but yeah indie rock does not feel like the cultural force it was even in ~2015.
i saw that courtney barnett’s “sometimes i sit and think” turned 10 the other day and i remember back when it came out it seemed to be making tons of noise past the level of artist she was before it.
i can’t think of a recent “indie rock” album that has crossed over into actually charting on billboard. the era of people like her or st vincent blowing up seems to be behind us.
